On Monday, August 19th at approximately 10:55 AM Pacific Standard Time (4:55 PM Eastern Standard Time) Becca Mann became the first swimmer in history to complete the Triple Maui Nui Channel Swim. Mann started at the Hawaiian island of Maui on Sunday, August 17th at 1 PM Pacific Standard Time (7 PM Eastern Standard Time), completing the swim in a time of 20 hours and 53 minutes.
Below is a graphic of the historic swim that Mann has completed today:
To this day, only one other swimmer, Harry Huffaker, had attempted to complete this swim. His story can be read here. As a result, Becca has become the first swimmer ever to do so. The triple swim adds up to 63.79 kilometers, which translates to approximately 39.64 miles.
In order to achieve her goals, it cost Mann approximately 10,000 U.S. dollars as she needed to fund all the swim operation, boats, paddlers, and management. Mann also indicated that “she would love to raise money for something good.”
Last August, Mann announced that she would turn pro, forgoing her final two seasons of NCAA competition for USC to focus on qualifying for next year’s Olympic Team in marathon swimming. The American swimmer is currently a student at USC’s screenwriting program. Though she has taken the year off from school to focus on her swimming career, Mann plans to return to cinema school in the future.
Most recently, Mann placed third in the 1500 free at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
Big Baller Becca
Amazing accomplishment Becca! Boomshakalaka x 63 for every Km completed. Outstanding!
What an incredible feat! Does she still train at USC? M
Has anyone swam the entire Mississippi? Becca?
North or south? You’d be hard-pressed to do the entire thing now that they closed the Upper St. Anthony Lock in Minneapolis. Best case you have quite a ride over the falls, worst case you’re probably at the wrong end of some high-powered weapons courtesy the United States Army before you get there. Or maybe I’ve got best case and worst case backward…
Looks like someone did it in 2015! https://www.outsideonline.com/2039926/three-challenges-swimming-entire-mississippi-river
I’d want a hazmat suit for some of it
