Ben Armbruster Fires Off 50 Fly Aussie Textile Record On Day 1 Of Nationals

2023 AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

In a stacked men’s 50m butterfly field on day one of the 2023 Australian National Championships, it was 2o-year-old Ben Armbruster of Bond who got the job done for gold.

Beating out the likes of Kyle Chalmers and Cody Simpson, Armbruster got to the wall in a time of 23.05, ripping his previous career-best of 23.66 to shreds in the process.

That left Olympic medalist Chalmers to collect silver in 23.35 while Cameron McEvoy bagged bronze in 23.68. Simpson wound up 10th overall in a final result of 24.52 at this non-selection meet.

For his effort, Armbruster established a new Australian All Comers Record, breaking the longstanding mark of 23.11 Geoff Huegill put on the books way back in 2009.

Armbruster also checks in as the 2nd fastest Australian of all-time and the swiftest ever in a textile suit.

Coincidence that Ben and Luca share the last name of the coach; David Armbruster, who “invented” butterfly?

It’s a shame he wasn’t interviewed on pool-deck.. is this the National Championships or what? I don’t feel the prestige of bygone years when winning the national title means something
