Benzing, Cundiff Headline CAA Weekly Swim & Dive Awards

RICHMOND, Va. (October 26, 2021) – Towson sophomore Brian Benzing was chosen as the CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Week while William & Mary senior Missy Cundiff repeated as the CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week. UNCW junior Courtney Klausen and James Madison sophomore Maddie Yager shared Women’s Diver of the Week accolades after both set NCAA Zone qualifying scores.

CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Week
Brian Benzing, So., Towson (Ellicott City, Md./OIS International School)

Benzing set a pool record and was a part of four victories in Towson’s 172-89 team win at William & Mary last Saturday. The sophomore captured the 100 breaststroke in a time of 55.29, setting a W&M Recreation Center record. He also took gold in the 100 fly with a time of 49.29, which is the fastest in the CAA this season. Benzing capped his day by contributing to first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.

CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Missy Cundiff, Sr., William & Mary (Leesburg, Va./Tuscarora)

Cundiff earned her second straight weekly honor after posting a pool record as part of three victories and a second-place finish to help William & Mary defeat Towson, 143-118, last Saturday. The senior claimed the 50 free with a time of 22.83, setting a W&M Recreation Center mark. She was just a tenth-second back of first place in the 100 free with a time of 52.02. Cundiff was also part of the Tribe’s winning teams in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.

CAA Women’s Co-Diver of the Week
Courtney Klausen, Jr., UNCW (Concord, Calif./Carondelet)

Klausen set a pair of NCAA Zone qualifying scores and recorded two first-place finishes in UNCW’s tri-meet with Campbell and UNC Asheville. The junior posted a career-best score of 301.13 on the 3-meter board, which was just the second time in Seahawks’ program history that a diver has topped the 300-point mark. Klausen also captured the 1-meter board with a score of 267.90.

CAA Women’s Co-Diver of the Week
Maddie Yager, So., James Madison (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley)

Yager took first place and posted a NCAA Zone qualifying score on the 1-meter board in James Madison’s meet at Duquesne. The sophomore posted a score of 294.38, which is the best of any diver in the CAA this season in the event. Yager also had a score of 259.13 on the 3-meter board.
