‘Best of the Rest’ Sprinter, 19.97 50 Freestyler Sean Setzer Heading to UNC for Fall ’24

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Waves of Wilimington, Inc’s Sean Setzer has handed his verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina for the fall of 2024. Setzer, who also competes for Eugene Ashley High School in Wilmington, NC, is one of SwimSwam’s ‘Best of the Rest’ for the boys class of 2024.

Setzer is a fantastic sprint freestyler, boasting a career best of 19.97 in the SCY 50 free. He’s also great long course, evidenced by his 2nd place finish in the 50 free at the Futures Championship in Ocala, where he clocked a 22.88. Setzer is a very good 100 freestyler as well, and he has a very solid 100 breast to boot as well.

Sean Setzer‘s Personal Best Times (Yards):

  • 50 Free – 19.97
  • 100 Free – 44.71
  • 200 Free – 1:40.46
  • 100 Breast – 56.38

Personal Bests (Long Course Meters):

  • 50 Free – 22.88
  • 100 Free – 51.02
  • 200 Free – 1:55.33
  • 100 Breast – 1:04.26

As things stand now, Setzer’s personal best in the 50 free comes in just off what it takes to qualify for finals at the ACC Championships. At the 2023 ACC Champs, it took a 19.94 to come in 24th in prelims, which is just 0.03 seconds faster than Seltzer’s PB.

Of note, Setzer joins fellow ‘Best of the Rest’ sprinter PJ Foy in UNC’s class of 2024. Foy is just off Setzer in the 50 free, boasting a PB of 20.00, though he’s faster in the 100 free, having been 43.9 before. The addition of that duo represents a huge boost to the UNC sprint group, which hasn’t been a huge strength of the men’s team in recent years.

UNC only had 3 swimmers under 20 seconds in the 50 free last season, the fastest of which had a season best of 19.65. Similarly, the Tar Heels only had 4 swimmers under 44 seconds in the 100 free last season.

Given that, Setzer should be able to make a very big immediate impact for UNC, both individually and on relays.

The Tar Heels men’s team finished 8th out of 12 teams at the 2023 ACC Championships. They went on to come in 23rd out of 38 teams at the 2023 Men’s NCAA Championships.

Setzer joins Foy, Eddie Jin, James Bennison, Brady Begin, and JT Schmid in UNC’s freshman class of 2024.

Boom! Let’s go. Time for a Tar Heel takeover. Haven’t been happier since Brad Kline and Warren Perry committed to UNC in the 90s.
