Caroline Piehl
Caroline Piehl is a freestyle and IM specialist originally from Colorado. Piehl was born May 3, 1993 to parents, Susan and Alan, and grew up in Centennial, Colo. She swam for the Colorado STARS, which is the same club team that produced Olympian Missy Franklin, and she rightfully so is a Denver Broncos fan. She’s currently a senior at the University of California, Berkeley where she’s studying Business Administration in the Haas School of Business. It’s obvious that Piehl has worked very hard in the classroom after receiving the CSCAA Scholar All-American honor and was a second-team Pac-12 All-Academic choice in 2014. She wants a career where she can combine her sports passion and her business degree. She joined Cal as an AP Scholar and a four-year Honor Roll student as well as an Academic All-American. She’s a natural leader – she was elected co-team captain at the end of her freshman season. Expected to lead and set an example for older and more experienced teammates, Piehl has been successful and has served as captain every season since.
UC Berkeley
2011-2012
As a freshman Piehl made a direct impact both scoring at the Pac 12 Championships and the NCAA Championships. She earned Honorable Mention All-America honors as an individual after coming in 13th in the freestyle. Piehl also swam the 100 freestyle and the 200 IM, but she was a member of the runner-up 800 freestyle relay, which earned her All-America honors.
2012-2013
Piehl followed up her freshman season by having a stellar sophomore year serving as co-captain. After qualifying for the NCAA Championships at the Pac 12 meet, she came in seventh in the 200 freestyle, and she was on Cal’s 800 freestyle relay that picked up a third-place finish.
2013-2014
In her junior season Piehl focused on developing her 200 IM and it paid off overall. She swam on Cal’s 400 and 800 freestyle relays that both took first place, and she made a second swim in two individual events – she finished 13th in the 200 IM and seventh in the 200 freestyle swimming a sub-1:44 time. She received the team’s Coaches Award.
2014-2015
Piehl is currently in her senior season as a Cal Bear. At the 2015 Pac 12 Championships she was a member of the 800 freestyle relay that broke the Pac 12 and NCAA record. She also finished ninth in the 200 IM, eight in the 200 freestyle and 12th in the 100 freestyle.
National Competition
Piehl graduated from Smoky Hill High School where she was a previous Colorado state high school record holder in the 100 freestyle and 200 IM.
She competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials finishing 56th in the 200m freestyle, 56th in the 100m freestyle and 87th in the 200 IM.
