Chantal Van Landeghem
Chantal Van Landeghem is a Canadian swimmer and multi-time All-American at the University of Georgia. The junior is an accomplished athlete, both in Canada and the States. Born on March 5, 1994 Van Landeghem hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She began swimming at the age of four at Manta Swim Club, which is the team she continued to compete for until joining the Lady Bulldogs. Van Landeghem is a Canadian National Record Holder and a member of the National Team. She’s just as dedicated of a student as she is an athlete, and was awarded the NCAA Elite 89 award in 2014 – an award given to the NCAA athlete with the highest GPA. In 2012 she missed the Canadian Olympics by .01 seconds, which has given her even more incentive in the water.
University of Georgia
2012-2013
Van Landeghem was a three-time All-American in just her freshman season as a Bulldog. She finished eighth in the 50 freestyle, first in the 400 freestyle relay, second on the 200 freestyle relay and also got an Honorable Mention nod in the 400 medley relay. She was also a First-Team Scholar All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Bulldogs won the national championship.
2013-2014
Her sophomore season earned a couple more All-American titles as the Bulldogs finished third in the 200 freestyle relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay. Van Landeghem helped the Bulldogs win their second consecutive national title. She was also named First-Team All SEC.
2014-2015
She’s posted an NCAA ‘A’ cut in the 50 freestyle before the 2015 SEC Championships. At the SEC meet Van Landeghem won the 50-yard free, finished 2nd in the 100-yard free and ended up 12th in the 100-yard back helping Georgia to its sixth-straight title. At the NCAA Championships she started off day one in the 200-yard free relay, which she swam the second leg and helped Georgia finish with a bronze in an extremely tight heat. She then backed up that swim with her individual 50-yard free, where she swam a sub-22 second swim in the 50, and finished 6th overall. Swimming her third event of the day, Van Landeghem anchored the 400-yard medley relay, which finished 8th.
On day two of the NCAA meet Van Landeghem started off with her fourth event in two days with the 400-yard medley relay. Her 21.27 anchor split aided Georgia to a 5th place finish. She returned for day three after a smaller event list, and started the day off with the 100-yard free. Van Landeghem advanced to the championship final, and dropped .10 seconds from her prelim swim to finish 5th. Teaming up with Georgia teammates, Van Landeghem swam the anchor leg to finish Georgia off in 3rd.
International Competition
At the 2014 Pan Pac Championships Van Landeghem broke the Canadian National 50m freestyle record clocking 24.69. The 50m freestyle record had been held since 2009. She missed the Canadian Olympic Team by .01 seconds in 2012. In the 50m freestyle she needed to touch in 25.27 seconds, and she finished in 25.28 seconds.
She won four medals along with one relay medal at the FINA Junior Swimming World Championships, and has also broken Canadian and Manitoban records, and at 17 years old she was voted Manitoba’s Female Athlete of the Year.
