Chloe Sutton was a two-time Olympian and was the first swimmer in US History to qualify for the Olympics as an open water swimmer and in the pool. In 2006, she won her first international medal by winning the open water 10k at the Pan Pacific Championships as a 14 year old. She was one of the few American swimmers that bypassed her college eligibility by going pro in 2009. She officially announced her retirement on February 3rd, 2015 after a very successful career.
Sutton started swimming at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love with the sport. She did an independent study program through the University of Nebraska and graduated from high school in 2010.
2006
2006 was a breakout year for Sutton. She won her first national title in the Open Water 10k at the US Open Water Championships. That year, she also competed and won a gold medal at the Victorian State Championships as a member of the US National Junior Team.
She was also named to the Pan Pacific Championship team. At that event, she won a gold medal for Team USA in the open water 10k.
2007
She added to her resume in 2007 by winning both the 10k and the 5k at the US Open Water National Championships. Internationally, she competed in the 2007 FINA World Championships but did not medal. She did, however, medal at the Pan American Championships in the open water 10k.
2008
Sutton’s open water success continued in 2008. She won a bronze medal at the 2008 Open Water World Championships in the open water 5k. She won the Beijing 10K Open Water test event, qualifying for the 2008 US Olympic Team. She competed in the 10K for Team USA at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and finished 22nd.
She did swim multiple events at the US Olympic Trials meet for the pool events. She was one spot away from making the team in the 800 freestyle with her third place finish.
2009
In 2009, Sutton qualified for the 2009 World Championship Team and competed in three pool events. Her best finish came in the 1500 freestyle, where she finished 8th. She finished 10th in the 800 freestyle and 13th in the 400 freestyle.
2010
In 2010, Sutton continued to swim well and won the 2009-2010 US Grand Prix Series. Internationally, she won two medals at the Pan Pacific Championships with a gold medal in the 400 freestyle and a silver medal in the 800 freestyle.
2011
Sutton won her second consecutive national title in the 800 meter freestyle at the US National Championships. She qualified to swim that event at the 2011 World Championships, as well. This was her third World Championship Team. She just missed the podium in the 800 freestyle, finishing fourth.
She also represented Team USA at the 2011 Duel in the Pool with a first place finish in the 400 freestyle.
2012
Chloe made history at the 2012 US Olympic Trials by finishing second in the 400 freestyle. After qualifying for the open water team in 2008, she was the first US swimmer to qualify for the Olympic Games in both open water and pool events.
At the Olympic Games, Sutton finished 10th in the 400 freestyle.
2013
She added three second place finishes at the US National Championships to qualify for her fourth World Championship team. At the World Championships, she finished 6th in the 800 freestyle, 8th in the 1500 freestyle, and 10th in the 400 freestyle.
She also represented Team USA at the Duel in the Pool against the European All Stars. She finished 5th in the 400 freestyle and 5th in the 800 freestyle.
