Cori Gary
Cori is daughter of Wanda Huffins and stepdaughter of Chris Huffins. She grew up primarily in Baltimore, MD and San Antonio, TX. Her step-brother Chris Huffins won bronze medal in decathlon at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Cori served as team captain for the Lady Flames for her junior and senior seasons with her main responsibility being organizing team service projects.
Club
Cori swam for Alamo Area Aquatics from ages 15 to 18 coached by Larry Huff. She qualified for Texas Sectionals all four years of high school. Cori competed in the Southern Zone Championship in 2008 and a finalist 2011. She also competed for her school team the Ronald Reagan HS Rattlers. Cori qualified for the Texas State Championship meet her sophomore, junior and senior year. As a senior at States she earned a gold medal in 200 free relay and silver medal in 400 free relay while also being named District Swimmer of the Year.
College
2011-2012
Cori had a fantastic freshman season making an immediate impact in the sprint freestyles for the Lady Flames. At the CCSA Championship she placed third in the 50 free with a 22.87 earning her a CCSA medal and NCAA B cut and CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-America honorable mention. She qualified for the 100 free conference final with lifetime-best 51.13, ultimately placing fifth with a 51.47. Cori also swam a personal-best 1:52.55 in the 200 free. Cori swam the third leg in victorious 400 free relay, which broke conference record in a time of 3:21.09 and earned a NCAA B cut. She helped to win the 200 free relay setting a conference record in NCAA B cut time of 1:31.36. Cori anchored second-place 200 (1:43.75) and 400 (3:46.07) medley relays, as Liberty set program records in both events. Cori also recieved CCSA All-Academic honors.
2012-2013
Cori Gary had a solid season of racing posting four individual event victories and nine relay wins during the regular season. She was voted the CCSA Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 31, after winning 100 free and 200 free against Marshall. Cori had another fantastic CCSA Championship meet earning two individual podium finishes. She posted a 22.96 in the 50 free to get third place and an NCAA B cut. She raced a lifetime best of 50.62 in the 100 free finishing in 5th place. She set a program record in the 200 freestyle with a 1:50.73 tying for third place. Cori Gary again contributed to Liberty’s relays, setting two conference-records and four program-records. She swam a 22.42 split in Liberty’s victorious 200 free relay setting a conference record in NCAA B cut time of 1:30.01. She also swam a 50.31 split helping to win the 400 free relay title in a conference-record time 3:20.23. She anchored Liberty’s second-place 400 medley relay and 800 free relay, which both set program records at CCSA Championships. Named to CCSA All-Academic team.
2013-2014
Cori Gary focused on sprint free and competed on three winning 200 free relays during regular season. At the CCSA Championship, she helped Liberty to a second place finish in the 200 free relay, splitting 22.74. Cori competed in the A final of the 50 freestyle swimming a season best time of 23.07. She also swam a 50.77 in the 100 free, ultimately finishing 8th place in finals.
2014-2015
Cori continued to be a force to reckoned with in the sprint freestyles for the Lady Flames. She raced in multiple victorious relays for the Flames throughout the regular season. At the CCSA Championship, Cori swam the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles as well as the 200 and 800 freestyle relay relays. Cori earned her place in two A finals in the 50 and 100 freestyle placing 5th and 8th respectively. Her prelims swim in the 50 freestyle tied her lifetime best time from 2012 and earned her 2nd seed going into the championship final. Cori earned two podium finishes for the Lady Flames with the 200 and 800 freestyle relays both earning second place. Cori was a member of the stand out senior class that earned Liberty three runner up finishes and one conference championship (2014) during her collegiate career.
Personal
She is majoring in Communications Studies: Broadcasting with a minor is Cinematic Arts. Cori is currently interning with Liberty Athletics Video Productions and assists with LU Olympic Sports interviews, broadcasting, and technical support. Cori Gary will graduate in May 2015.
