David Morgan is an Australian butterfly specialist and 2016 Rio Olympic medalist. Although he now lives on the Gold Coast in Brisbane Australia, Morgan was born in Wales where he lived until his family moved to Australia when he was 10. Morgan came from a swimming background, following in his mothers footsteps. At just 15 years old, Amanda James competed in the Montreal Olympics for Great Britain in the 100 meter backstroke.
Morgan currently trains at The Southport School Aquatics Team under Head Coach Chris Nesbit. When he eventually steps away from the pool, Morgan hopes to pursue a career as a paramedic.
International Swimming
Morgan represented the Australian Dolphins in 2014 at the FINA World Short Course Championships in Doha, Qatar. He finished 15th in both the 50 and 100 meter butterfly.
2015 FINA World Championships
In Kazan, Russia, Morgan won a silver medal for his heat swim in the 4×100 meter medley relay. Along with Mitch Larkin, Jake Packard and Kyle Chalmers, Morgan qualified Australia into the final in second position. Morgan also swam the 200 meter butterfly. He made the semi-final, finishing 16th in 1:58.83.
2016 Rio Olympics
In his first Olympics at the age of 22, Morgan won a bronze medal as a member of the 4×100 meter medley relay. Swimming the butterfly leg, Morgan had the second fastest split of 51.18 behind only Michael Phelps. But it wasn’t enough to catch up with Great Britain who finished with silver or USA who took the Olympic title.
In his individual swims, Morgan narrowly missed out on the 100 meter butterfly final, finishing ninth in the semi-finals in 51.75. In the 200 meter butterfly he finished 19th in 1:56.81.
