Hellen Moffit

University of North Carolina swimmer, Hellen Moffitt is a butterfly and backstroke specialist from Alexandria, Virginia. At the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference championships, Moffitt powered through the rankings, jumping to the sixth all-timer performer in the 100-yard butterfly. She was previously ranked outside the top-50.

Personal Life

A versatile high school swimmer, Moffitt competed in backstroke, butterfly and sprint freestyle events for West Potomac High School and Machine Aquatics in Virginia. As a Junior, Moffitt qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke.  She ended her high school career as a Virginia state runner up in the 100 yard butterfly and backstroke and earned seven All-American selections. The five-star recruit committed to the University of North Carolina Tarheels.

College Swimming

2013-2014

In her first season as a Tarheel, Moffitt scored points for her team in the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference championships in 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke finishing 8th and 19th respectively.

2014-2015

With some collegiate experience under her belt, Moffitt returned to UNC for her sophomore season and sent school records tumbling at the 2015 ACC’s. On the opening night at the 2015 ACC’s Moffitt lead off the 200-yard medley relay, helping her team break the UNC school record by 0.01 seconds. Moffitt returned to the pool breaking two more school records in the 100-yard butterfly and backstroke preliminaries. She was just off her school records in the finals, finishing 4th in 100-yard butterfly and 5th in 100-yard backstroke. Moffitt earned her first medal of her ACC career in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing third in 1:53.88. In her first NCAA championship appearance, Moffitt earned All-American honors with a tied-15th place finish in 100-yard butterfly and 10th place in 400-yard medley relay.

2015-2016

Moffitt had a standout year as a junior at UNC. Her most impressive swim came in the 100-yard butterfly prelims at the ACC championships. Her time of 50.67 broke her own school record and she burst in to the rankings as the sixth best performer in the history of the event. She touched 2nd in the final, slightly off her new best time. Moffitt picked up more hardware, with bronzes in 100 and 200-meter backstroke. Both swims were also UNC school records.

2016-2017

Moffitt finished her NCAA Career by placing Second in the 100 Fly with a time of 50.37, just behind the winner, Farida Osman by .32 seconds. She also finished 8th in the 100 back (51.14), and 21st in the 200 back (1:53.19).

2017 US World Team Trials

Moffitt finished second in the 50M Fly with a 26.19 losing to winner, Kelsi Worrell, as well as 5th in the 100m fly (58.40), qualifying her for a spot on the World University Games roster.

Swimming her first race on the 5th day of competition, Moffitt scored a gold medal in the 100m fly, taking victory in 58.70
