College (Michigan)
2016-2017
In his freshman season at Michigan, Smachlo finished fourth in the 200 fly (1:43.46), sixth in the 100 fly (46.43) and 18th in the 200 IM (1:45.23) at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
At the NCAA Championships, he placed 25th in the 200 fly (1:43.38) and 31st in the 100 fly (46.52). Smachlo was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American honoree at the end of the year.
2017-2018
In his sophomore season at Michigan, Smachlo finished 16th in the 200 fly (1:42.03) and 33rd in the 100 fly (46.39) at the NCAA Championships.
Smachlo placed fifth in the 200 fly (1:43.64), seventh in the 100 fly (46.16) and 10th in the 200 IM (1:45.39) at the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis.
2018-2019
Smachlo had a breakout junior year, taking himself from non-scorer at the national level to national contender. Smachlo won the 100 fly title at the Big Ten Championships (44.82), while also finishing fourth in the 200 fly (1:42.73) and 19th in the 50 free (19.72). He was a member of Michigan’s Big Ten champion 200 medley relay team, which set a meet record (1:22.76) at the conference meet as well.
At the 2019 NCAA Champs, Smachlo finished third in the 100 butterfly (44.84) and 35th in the 200 fly (1:44.60). He was also part of Michigan’s 400 freestyle relay (16th), 200 medley relay (18th), 200 freestyle relay (19th) and 400 medley relay (25th) at the NCAAs.
Smachlo was named first Team All-Big Ten honoree and Academic All-Big Ten selection.
2019-2020
Smachlo capped off his B1G career repeating as champion in the 100 fly (45.05). He also finished 2nd in the 200 fly (1:41.47) and 10th in the 50 free (19.72).
