Philip Heintz is a German double Olympian, competing in the 200 meter individual medley at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. The 6’4″ swimmer is based at SV Nikar Heidelberg in Germany under head coach Michael Spikermann. He is also a Team Arena sponsored swimmer.
Heintz partner Nina Kost also represents Germany in the pool.
International Career
Heintz had his first international call-up for Germany at the 2009 European Junior Championships where he won bronze medals in the 100 meter butterfly and the 400 meter freestyle relay.
In 2012, Heintz made his senior debut at the European Championships before heading to his first Olympic Games in London. He swam in the 200 meter individual medley heats.
At the 2013 FINA World Championships. Heintz finished fifth as a member of Germany’s 400 meter medley relay. He also made the semi-final in the 100 meter butterfly. His first senior medal came later in 2013 when he took gold in the 200 meter medley at the European Short Course Championships.
At the long Course European Championships in 2014, Heintz claimed the 200 meter medley silver medal.
2016 Rio Olympic Games
In his second Olympic Games, Heintz made his first Olympic final in the 200 meter individual medley. He finished sixth, just 0.01 behind USA’s Ryan Lochte in 1:57.48.
2017 World Championships
In Budapest, Heintz finished 7th in the 200 meter medley final in 1:57.43.
2017 SCM European Championships
Heintz won the 200IM in 1:52.41 on day three of the meet. He also touched the wall second in the 400 IM behind Hungary’s Peter Bernek.
2018 European Championships
Heintz earned himself 2 medals in Glasgow, the first being a silver in the 200 IM final, touching at 1:57.83 only behind Jeremy Desplanches. On the last day of competition, he swam prelims on the German 4×100 medley relay, which went on to get bronze in finals.
