Ty Stewart
Born July 13, 1994 to parents, Kerry Stewart and Kru Fairey, Ty Stewart is an English major at the University of Georgia. Stewart is versatile, and in the 2014-2015 made NCAA ‘B’ cuts in numerous including the 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and 200 butterfly. As a senior in high school his time in the 200 backstroke would’ve been Georgia’s fastest time on the roster. Back in his hometown of Hattiesburg, Miss., Stewart was home schooled and swam for the Y Hub Fins club team coached by Steve Panzram. Stewart is currently in his junior year at Georgia, and already has the school record in the 200 backstroke and some of the fastest times in Georgia history in his other events. He’s been a member of Georgia’s NCAA Team during both his freshman and sophomore seasons, was also a member of the U.S. National Junior Team, and left age group swimming as one of Mississippi’s best swimmers in history. He was a Mississippi state champion and broke 28 Mississippi state age group records in long course swimming alone. Stewart was the only swimmer from Mississippi to have qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
University of Georgia
2012-2013
As a freshman Stewart had a spectacular first SEC Championship meet – he made the SEC’s All-Freshman Team, and was chosen as a First-Team Scholar All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. He qualified for the NCAA Championships swimming the 200 IM, finishing 12th in the 200 backstroke and came in 11th as a member of the 400 medley relay. Stewart was recognized as the SEC Freshman of the Week Oct. 23 after a dual meet vs. Georgia Tech.
2013-2014
Stewart was named to the Second Team All-SEC after finishing in the top eight in all three of his individual events. Once again he qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championships where he earned more All-America honors finishing eighth in the 400 IM and 10th in the 200 backstroke. Academically Stewart received the Elite 89 Award as the swimmer with the highest GPA (4.0) at the NCAA Championships.
2014-2015
Stewart is currently in his junior year as a Georgia Bulldog. He was inducted into Georgia’s Leadership Academy, and received the Ramsey Scholarship for Academic and Athletic Excellence. Stewart won the 200 IM at the SEC Championships, finished sixth in the 200 backstroke and fourth in the 200 butterfly.
International Competition
Stewart was a member of the U.S. National Junior Team, and represented the U.S. at multiple international competitions. He attended Duel in the Pool in Japan as well as the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii.
He qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier competing in multiple events including the 100m and 200m backstroke, the 100m and 200m butterfly, and the 200m and 400m IM.
