Zach Harting is a competitive swimmer who represents the United States internationally. He is a 2021 Olympian in the 200 fly and pan pacific championships medalist.
Juniors
Harting was named to the USA Junior National Team after qualifying in the 200 butterfly. At USA Nationals, he finished 21st in the 100 fly.
At the Junior World Championships in Singapore, he finished fifth in the 200 fly (1:59.42)
Harting also was a 2016 Olympic Trial qualifier in the 200 fly.
As a prepster at Bob Jones High School, Harting was the 2014 High School State Champion in the 100-yard butterfly and was invited to USA Swimming National Select Camp. He was a member of the NCSA Ireland Team in 2015, where he finished second in both the 100 and 200 fly. He placed eight in the 200 fly at the 2014 Summer Junior Nationals and was fourth in the event at the 2014 Winter Junior Nationals. Harting was a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
University of Louisville
2015-16
Harting was part of the seventh place 800 freestyle relay team at the NCAA Championships (6:15.86), while also swimming the 500 free and 100 and 200 butterfly. At the ACC Championships, he won silver in the 200 butterfly (1:$2.95), finished fifth in the 400 IM (3:47.86) and won the B final of the 500 free (4:19.76). He was named to the All-ACC Academic squad.
At U.S. Olympic Team Trials, he was seventh in the 200 butterfly (1:56.92).
2016-17
At the NCAA Championships, Harting placed 11th in the 200 butterfly with a school record time of 1:41.65. He also swam the 100 butterfly and 500 free and was a member of the 400 and 800 freestyle relays. At the ACC Championships, Harting was second in the 200 fly (1:41.95), fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:16.67) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (46.42). He also was a member of the school record breaking 800 free relay team, which won silver.
At the World Championship Trials, Harting placed sixth in the 100 fly (52.52) and 200 fly (1:56.65), while also swimming in the 50 fly and 200 free.
At the U.S. Open Swimming Championships, he was fourth in the 200 fly and 13th in the 100 fly.
2017-18
Harting swam the second leg of the 800 yard freestyle relay (7th, 6:13.49) and 400 yard freestyle relay (13th, 2:50.83). He was the third leg of the 400 yard medley (7th, 3:04.37), 200 yard medley (7th, 1:23.84) and 200 freestyle relay (15th, 1:17.35).
Individually, Harting was tied for 13th in the 200 butterfly (tied for fifth in the B final, 1:41.81). He also placed 15th in the 200 freestyle (1:34.00) after swimming 1:33.16 in the prelims.
World University Games 2017
Harting was part of the gold medal 4×100 freestyle and medley relays. He also qualified for the semifinals in the 200 butterfly (9th, 1:58.04) and 100 butterfly (12th, 53.23).
2018 U.S. National Championships
Harting was the runnerup in the 200 butterfly (1:55.11), qualifying him for the 2018 Pan Pac Championships and putting him on his first ever USA “A” team. Harting also finished sixth in the 100 butterfly (52.00). He also finished 28th in the 200 freestyle (1:49.83).
2018 Pan Pacific Championships
Harting kept his momentum into pan pacs, using his patented back half to touch for bronze in the 200 fly in Tokyo with yet another new best time (1:55.01).
ISL – DC Trident
On June 11, 2019, Zach Harting was announced as a member of the DC Trident ISL team, headed by GM Kaitlin Sandeno.
2021 Olympic Trials
On Night 4 in Omaha, Harting punched his ticket to Tokyo, winning the 200 fly in 1:55.06 using his signature come-from-behind strategy.
2020 Olympic Games
Harting started his first Olympic Games off strong, swimming to a new lifetime best of 1:54.92 to finally get under the 1:55 mark and seed himself 4th headed into the semi-final.
