Ryan Garstang, 17, Olympus Aquatics (OA-UT): 200 free, 1:41.67 – Ryan Garstang, then 16, entered 2019 with a best time of 1:54.06 in the 200-yard free. In his first swim of the year, Garstang went 1:53.32, and then in March, went 1:45.11. Last weekend at the 2019 Pumpkin Invite, he dropped three-and-a-half seconds, going 1:41.67. At the same meet, he went a best time in the 100 free (47.44), 500 free (4:45.50), 100 back (49.18), 200 breast (2:10.67) and 100 IM (52.27).
Zach Larrick, 14, Rosemead Aquatics (RORA-CA): 400 IM, 4:10.40 – Fourteen-year-old Zach Larrick entered 2019 with a best time of 4:18.76 in the 400-yard IM. In his only prior swim this year, way back in January, Larrick went 4:19.20. Last weekend, he went 4:10.40, a new quadruple-A cut. Larrick also went a best time in the 100 fly (53.59).
Emma Karam, 15, Reno Aquatic Club (RENO-OC): 100 fly, 59.88 – Fifteen-year-old Emma Karam ended 2017 with a best time of 1:08.63 in the 100 fly. She went on to swim it just once in 2018, going 1:09.48. In her first attempt of 2019, she went 1:02.36, and last weekend, she left the minute-barrier in the dust to go 59.88.
Bridget Ye, 14, Long Island Aquatic Club (LIAC-MR): 200 breast, 2:21.96 – Then-13-year-old Bridget Ye finished 2018 with a best time of 2:22.91 in the 200-yard breast. In seven earlier attempts in 2019, she never when faster than 2:22.93. Then last weekend, went 2:21.96 at the 2019 LIAC Chappy’s Big Race Invitational.
Luke Ellis, 13, Sandpipers of Nevada (SAND-CA): 1650 free, 16:53.48 – Then-11-year-old Luke Ellis exited 2018 with a best time of 17:51.00 in the 1650-yard free. In February, he went 17:25.27, a quadruple-A cut, then last weekend at the 2019 Sandpipers Pumpkin Invite, he went 16:53.48.
