Arizona State has been having a heck of a season so far and it’s barely November. In dual meets against Georgia and NC State, where both teams were wearing technical racing suits, ASU’s men came away with decisive wins while their women showed a lot of promise. The ASU pro group also raced during these dual meets, one notable race coming in the form of Regan Smith breaking the American record in the 200y fly.
ASU head coach Bob Bowman and associate head coach Herbie Behm sat down with SwimSwam to discuss completely changing the training group structure after the departure of Rachel Stratton-Mills to Northwestern and how that has affected the team culture.

If Regan went 1:17 in a 150 back, I’m pretty sure she’d break the AR in SCY if she swims it. I bet she’d go 1:46 or maybe even 1:45.
Always some of the most insight podcasts with Bob and Herbie.
Seems like they’re describing their training as progressive overload, which is how strength and flexibility and conditioning has worked for decades but swimming has always been left up to a sort of pseudoscience. Where no one really knows what’s going on and why certain swimmers progress and get faster and others don’t.
I realize this was (probably?) unintentional from Bob, but he completely threw RSM under the bus for the women underperforming recently in the first 5 min of the pod.
From what he said, the men and the women were on the same trajectory pre-pandemic. Then they red shirted the teams, decided to split the programs (with him and Herbie taking the men and RSM taking the women), and the men started performing well and the women regressed.
He also mentions the women’s team had more veterans on it who ended up retiring, but explains their inability to recruit well by saying that he wasn’t focused on women’s recruiting.
He’s completely putting the responsibility for the women underperforming on RSM.
Not surprising.
I didn’t see it that way. I think it was the pandemic and the timing and the women were at the end of their college careers.
Have you considered that maybe the responsibility was on RSM? She coached 90% of the women during her time there.
Who was head coach?
Herbie looks like he’s being held hostage lol
His demeanor at the outset of the podcast was absolutely hilarious. Looked like a kid in the backseat of the car, on the way to grandma’s house, who had to go to bathroom for the past 30 miles. “I told you to go before we left the house, but no, you wouldn’t listen!” ~ said every dad ever, from 1955-1980.
(Herbie is awesome, but that opening sequence was so funny)
Unrelated but apparently Hafanoui out of IU
How come?
Need more details..
Still on the roster right now.
The piss missile burned bright but not for long
What does this mean?
you had to be there
Must not have been amicable. He scrubbed any IU affiliation off his insta.
Possible that he was told to shut down talk about the Israel-Palestine conflict? I’m not an active follower of his but I heard he voiced support for donations and was torn apart. Maybe coaches wanted him to keep quiet and he wasn’t happy about that
I wouldn’t be happy if I was told to shut down my use of free speech. You can be Pro-Palestine and Anti-Hamas at the same time. He probably has a greater understanding and a greater connection to what’s going on over there since he is originally from that part of the world.
Let’s think about some of the last few times coaches have told their swimmers to keep quiet:
-Teri McKeever
-Penn Women’s Team
This.
Hafnaoui has greater understanding of middle east conflict than any UI students, administrators, swim coaches.
Please give proof lol this claim is huge
Probably cause swimming in short course yards sucks
The dude splashed around in the bathtub and is now clean and ready for the big boy pool
