Jeremy Kipp has been named the new head coach of the Boise State Broncos, moving north after an 8 year coaching career at USC that ended with him as the program’s head assistant coach.
“We are very excited to welcome Jeremy into the Bronco Family as the next head coach of our swimming and diving program,” Executive Director of Athletics Curt Apsey said. “Jeremy’s body of work over the past 16 years has helped elevate the swim programs at both USC and UC Santa Barbara to great heights. We look forward to his leadership in continuing to build upon the winning tradition of Boise State women’s swimming and diving.”
At USC, Kipp worked with both the men’s and women’s programs, whileas at Boise St. he’ll be running a women’s-only group. His background is primarily with the Trojan sprint groups and he also led the USC men’s recruiting efforts.
Prior to USC, Kipp spent an equal number of years as an assistant at another co-ed program: UC Santa Barbara.
While USC, with its national reputation, didn’t necessarily recruit exclusively from California, Kipp’s men’s team last season had 12 swimmers from the state, and he has a long history within the Sunshine State. That could be valuable for Boise, where 6 of the 18 current swimmers for this coming season come from California, and none come from Idaho.
Boise State’s football team, it’s best-known athletics program, has 40 members from California, which shows that talent from one of the richest athletics recruiting areas in the country can be enticed north to Idaho.
The Boise State program has only been in existence for 9 years, and has had only one prior head coach, Kristin Hill, who resigned after last season. They’ve already developed themselves into one of the top mid-major programs in the country, however, have won the Mountain West Conference championship twice in the last four seasons and return two NCAA qualifiers (Brittany Aoyama and Sam Wicks).
It’s a program that has historically been built around the sprints in a conference that is very sprint-heavy, which puts the program’s traditions in Kipp’s wheelhouse.
“I am both excited and humbled that Curt Apsey and his staff have chosen me to lead the Boise State women’s swimming and diving program,” Kipp said. “It’s hard to believe that the program has had only nine years in existence, which speaks to the excellent support and culture ingrained in the Boise State athletic department. Obviously Kristin Hill had a large part of that success and I aim at pushing the program forward on all levels from performance in the classroom, pool and civic engagement. My wife Suzy and sons Jonathan and Patrick are proud to join the Bronco family and looking forward to calling Boise our home.”
I am sorry to see Kipp leave USC, where he has been an important part of the coaching staff for 8 years. However, I am very happy for him and know that he will lead the Boise State women’s program to even greater success in the years to come.
Sounds like a great hire. BSU needs a new pool badly. It might be one of Coach Kipp’s main priorities.
The city of Boise and the surrounding areas does not have very many nice pools. Almost all of them are very old and outdated.
I hope BSU gets a new one in the near future.
Outstanding Jeremy! I know some swimmers there that will be very excited!
Proud of our work together. The broncos are better for the hire. Good luck and “keep it movin”
