Bolles’ James Daugherty Verbally Commits to California Golden Bears

Five-time Florida 1A state champion James Daugherty has made a verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley for the 2017-18 season.

“I am beyond excited to have the opportunity to continue both my academic and athletic careers at the University of California, Berkeley. The recruitment process has been an incredible experience and I can’t thank the coaches and team members enough for sharing their time with me. In the end, Cal best represented an environment where I could see myself achieving my goals. Go Bears!”

Daugherty is a senior at Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida. He is the reigning FHSAA Class 1A champion in the 100 breast, having won the event for the second time last November with 54.79. He was also fifth in the 100 fly (50.72) and split a 25.09 50 breast to help Bolles capture gold in the medley relay. At the 2014 state meet he won the 100 breast handily (55.27), placed seventh in the 100 fly (50.43), and was the breaststroker on Bolles’ winning medley relay. As a freshman in 2013 he placed second in the breast and contributed to Bolles’ victory in the medley relay.

Daugherty competes year-round for the Bolles School Sharks. While his 200 breast times date from sophomore year, he improved both his SCY and LCM 100 breasts this past season. Daugherty’s best times are:

  SCY LCM
50 breast 26.13 30.06
100 breast 54.26 1:03.02
200 breast 2:00.60 2:23.27
100 fly 50.28 59.02

Daugherty will have one year of overlap with current Cal breaststroke juniors Connor Hoppe, Zach Stevens, and Matt Whittle, and a couple more with Karl Arvidsson and Carson Sand. He will join the Golden Bears with fellow class of 2021 commits Daniel Carr and Ryan Hoffer.

Congrats to the Bears & te young man.

What would be worth more, to have a pipeline from Mission Viejo Natadores in the late 1970s or having a pipeline from Bolles in the 2010s? Has to be a close call…so many fabulous kids coming out of Bolles.

On that note, is there any news on wether Andrea Vergani is actually going to Cal? He committed last year but it looks like he left Bolles and he isn’t on the Cal roster now, though he did swim meets in Italy last season. Albert Gwo is also not on their roster.
