Bonnet and Dowgiert Set Records on Day 2 of World Military Games

Charlotte Bonnet of France and Anna Dowgiert of Poland both set new championship records on the second day of competition at the World Military Games in Mungyeong, South Korea.

In the first event of the evening Bonnet took the women’s 100 freestyle in a time of 54.95 breaking the championship mark of 55.22 set by Shan Ying in 1999. Last year the French athlete set the championship record in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:57.99, an event which will be swum tomorrow.

Viktoriia Andreeva of Russia finished second in a time of 56.22 followed by Brazilian Graciele Herrmann who posted a 56.47.

Anna Dowgiert of Poland won the women’s 50 butterfly in a time of 26.11. Dowgiert beat the record of 26.18 set by Melanie Henique at last year’s competition. Her time places her third in the world rankings and is also a new Polish national record.

Russian Svetlana Chimrova finished second in a time of 26.23 followed by the former event record holder Henique of France who hit the wall in a time of 26.35.

In the final women’s event of the evening the Chinese team dominated the 4 x 100 medley relay taking the event in a time of 4:07.27 three seconds ahead of the Russian team who posted a 4:10.81. Brazil finished third in a time of 4:12.00.

Evgeny Lagunov won the men’s 100 freestyle in a time of 49.85 followed by Egyptian Mohamed Hassan who touched in a time of 50.05. Brazilian Nicolas Oliveira who collected the bronze in a time of 50.19.

Brazilian teammates Nicholas Santos and Henrique Martins finished one two in the men’s 50 butterfly. Santos put up a 23.30 while Martins hit the wall in a time of 23.62. Santos already sits atop of the world rankings with a time of 23.08 while Martins’ time now puts him fourth in the world.

Russian Nikita Konovalov finished third in a time of 23.85.

Chinese Swimmer Fu Haifeng and Qiao Zhongyi both collected gold for thier country. Fu took the 400 IM in a time of 4:20.74 while Qiao won the 1500 freestyle in a time of 15:14.21.

The Russian 4 x 100 medley relay team won the event in a new championship record time of 3:37.95. They were followed by the Brazilians who posted a 3:39.67 and Poland who finished in a time of 3:41.07.

After the second day of competition the Chinese still lead the medal standings with seven gold, four silver and four bronze. The Brazilians are in second with four gold, five silver and four bronze while the Russian are in third with four gold, four silver and five bronze.
