Bonnies Swim Fast but fall to Buffalo

WOMEN

Competing in its final home meet this season, the St. Bonaventure women’s swimming and diving team came out strong on Wednesday at the Reilly Center against the University of Buffalo, but ultimately fell short 164-114.

The Bonnies were led by freshman Tanja Kirmse, who won two events, and senior Jeanette Dietrich, who recorded one first place finish and one runner-up showing.  Kirmse won both the 100 butterfly in a time of 58.66 and the 200 butterfly in 2:06.74.  Dietrich captured the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.13.   She also was the runner-up in the 100 free with a time of 53.85

In the 200 free, St. Bonaventure’s Shannon Haberman took second in 1:56.98.

In the 100 backstroke, junior Rachel Bull took first place in a time of 1:00.52. Laura O’Bierne and Mackenzie Courtney placed second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke at 1:10.69 and 1:10.93.

In the 50 freestyle, the Bonnies’ Meaghan McCann took second in 25.43 followed by Taylor Anderson in third place in 25.53.

In the 100 freestyle, Dietrich placed second with a time of 53.85, followed by Anderson who placed third in 55.56. Alexa Scanlan was the lone Bonnie to place in the 200 backstroke, coming in third with a time of 2:11.96.

O’Bierne would get another top finish in the meet, this time in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:26.90 and a first place finish.

Shannon Haberman placed third in the 500 yard freestyle late in the meet, registering a time of 5:15.14, just ahead of teammate Rachel Bull. Tanja Kirmse continues her stellar form on the season, coming in first again

Elizabeth Malone concluded the individual events for the Bonnies, placing third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:39.59.

The Brown and White saw success yet again in the relay events with the team of Kirmse, Anderson, Bull, and Dietrich placing second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.45.

The Bonnies will return to action this Saturday, January 25, when they travel to Niagara.

MEN

The St. Bonaventure University men’s swimming and diving team fell to the University at Buffalo, 171–129, in its final home meet of the season at the Reilly Center Pool on Wednesday afternoon.

For the day, the Brown and White captured six first place victories out of 14 events.

Matt Rochna started the Bonnies off with a win the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.33.

Viacheslav Shchukin (45.53) and Ripley Danner (59.03) continued their successes in the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, respectively, events which both have dominated this season.  Michael White took first in the 200 butterfly (1:54.23) while Rochna took home his second victory of the day in the 100 butterfly (51.30).  In the last event of the day, the team of Danner, David Paccapaniccia, Shchukin and Jimmy Martin took first in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:23.91.

The Bonnies took second place in the 200 medley relay as Michael Pilyugin, Danner, Matthew Schutt and Martin finished with a time of 1:35.26.  White won the silver in the 400 individual medley, coming in at 4:09.58.

In diving action, Olean native Alex Marra took first in the three-meter competition and was second on the one-meter board.

Preston Schilling (1:00.52) took third in the 100-yard breaststroke, being out touched by only six-tenths of a second. Pilyugin, Paccapaniccia, and Danner all took second in their respective events.  Pilyugin touched in at 1:56.38 in the 200 backstroke. In the 50 freestyle, Paccapaniccia recorded a time of 21.65.  Danner came in at 51.66 in the 100 butterfly.

The Bonnies will return to action this Saturday, January 25, when they take on Niagara.
