CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The Boston College swim and dive team reigned successful in their premiere meet of the New Year, as they took down Dartmouth in a dual meet at home Friday afternoon. The women’s team won by a 157.5-141.5 margin while the men’s team held a 165-133 advantage.

Highlighting the meet for the women’s team was eight first-place finishes, including wins in both the 200-yard freestyle and medley relays. Maura Grimes, Victoria Lin and Ali Kea contributed in both relays while Taylor Covington added to the 1:46.36 medley finish and Haley Dolan helped push to the first-place 1:36.01 finish in the freestyle.

Maura Grimes also earned a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 57.67, while Victoria Lin took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.58. Ali Kea placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a 24.22 finish while Haley Dolan placed second in the same event (24.26). Grace Edwards found a similar result in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in first place with a time of 2:07.17, while Maura Grimes placed just behind her in 2:07.78. Alexa Lantin placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke as she finished in 2:24.67.

For the men’s team, Taylor Cortens earned three individual wins and contributed to one first-place relay finish. His 100-yard individual medley time of 52.64 set the all-time program record, as the senior captain now holds 11 Boston College records. He also placed first in the 100-yard butterfly (51.16) and 100-yard backstroke (52.14). The top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke were swept by the Eagles, as Talmage Corey earned second (52.98) and Alex Shehab placed third (53.23).

The relay team of Michael Hinton, Damion Ribeiro, Colin Deredyn and Kevin Chandra earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.97. Taylor Cortens, Billy Miller, Colin O’Leary and Colin Deredyn earned first in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in 1:33.50.

Charlie Kleinsmith and Peter Shepanzyk shared the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke, each finishing with a time of 2:10.85. Billy Miller finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 58.12, as Sami Fares placed second (58.82) and Charlie Kleinsmith finished third (59.25). Similar results were found in the 50-yard freestyle, as Colin Deredyn (21.24), Kevin Chandra (21.80) and Damion Ribeiro (21.82) swept the top-three finishes.

The Eagles wrap up their 2018-19 home meets Saturday afternoon, hosting Marist at 1:00 p.m. in the Flynn Recreation Complex Pool.

NEWTON, Mass. – Dartmouth men’s swimming and diving narrowly fell to Boston College, 165-133, on Friday evening, winning eight events throughout the meet.

The Big Green’s 200-yard medley A and B relays touched in third and fourth place with times of 1:36.62 and 1:36.97. Joe Moll won the 1000-yard freestyle (9:55.52), leaving a 10-second gap between him and the BC swimmer in second. Maxwell Jones all picked up two points by coming in fourth (10:12.63). Moll’s second victory came in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.53).

In the 200-yard freestyle, Connor LaMastra came in first (1:43.23), out-touching Michael Hinton by six-tenths of a second. John Hall followed soon after in third (1:45.30). Swimming the 100-yard backstroke, Dylan Chan finished highest for Dartmouth in fourth (53.78), while Robert Purvis came in sixth place (55.24).

Brandon Liao and Connor Richmond touched a tenth of a second apart in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with times of 59.53 and 59.66, respectively. Richmond also came third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.86). LaMastra was back in the 200-yard fly, winning with a time of 1:52.20, leaving a two-second gap behind him. Matt Luciano earned two points with his fourth-place finish (1:57.85). For his third victory, LaMastra won the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.38).

In the 50-yard freestyle, Henry Patrick placed fourth (21.96) and Luke Rohlen was sixth (22.13). The duo was back a few events later in the 100-yard freestyle: Patrick was first (47.42) and Rohlen was fourth (48.47). Also picking up a point was Liao in fifth (48.69). In an event not typically swam, the 100-yard IM, Moll placed second (53.77), Chan was fourth (54.92) and Parker Hershberger came in fifth place (55.68).

Dartmouth’s divers took the top three spots on the 3-meter board: Justin Sodokoff led the way with an NCAA zone-qualifying score (351.22) and was followed by AJ Krok (306.97) and Ray Neistat (267.67). It was a similar story on 3-meter when Sodokoff placed first (343.87), Neistat took second (295.65) and Krok came third (280.57). In the 100-yard fly, Luciano (51.81), Matt Degtyar (52.22) and Hall (52.64) finished all in a row.

In the last event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Dartmouth placed second (1:26.33), out-touching BC by less than two-tenths.

The Green have a short turnaround, hosting Connecticut at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Dartmouth women’s swimming and diving fell to Boston College in a very close meet by a score of 157.5-141.5 on Friday evening, winning eight events along the way.

The Big Green started the night off by placing third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.90), touching just over half a second behind BC’s B relay in second. They went 1-2 in the 1000-yard freestyle, picking up 13 points when Molly Brickman took first (10:44.50) and Sarah Finlay came in second place (10:56.24).

In the 200-yard freestyle, Zoe Wortzman was first (1:54.97), Laura Barthold took second (1:55.88) and Mia Leko came in fourth (1:56.47), earning a total of 15 points. Leko was back in the 200-yard fly, finishing in second place (2:07.57).

Connie Zhang was second in the 100-yard backstroke (59.01), narrowly beating Grace Edwards to the wall. Caroline Poleway also picked up a point by taking fifth (1:00.28). In the 200-yard breaststroke, Poleway came in third place (2:08.16), while Laster also scored in fifth (2:12.54).

Swimming the 100-yard breaststroke, Mackenzie Stumpf came in first place (1:05.99) by just a tenth of a second. Maggie Deppe-Walker tied a BC swimmer for third (1:07.98), while Kenna Van Steyn took fifth (1:08.99). Dartmouth’s 50-yard freestylers touched within five-tenths of a second of each other: Summer Martin led the way in third (24.38) and was followed by Wortzman (24.39), Ashley Post (24.66) and Eleanor Zwart (24.86). Martin won the 100-yard freestyle (52.14), and Wortzman earned three points of her own by placing third (53.15).

The Big Green divers combined for 12 points on the 3-meter board. Maggie Pionzio was first (263.85), while Isabella Lichen took third (245.02). Pionzio also won on the 1-meter board (270.52) and was followed by Lichen in second place (253.50). In the 200-yard breaststroke, Melanya Zaraska finished highest for Dartmouth in second (2:25.53). Also scoring were Deppe-Walker (2:26.93) and Van Steyn (2:28.50). In an event not typically swam, the 100-yard IM, Stumpf touched in first place (59.56), while Zaraska was fifth (1:01.72).

In the 500-yard freestyle, the Green earned 15 of the possible 19 when Sarah Minnigh took first (5:05.40), Post was second (5:07.87) and Barthold took fourth (5:20.68). Cathleen Li placed second in the 100-yard fly (57.48) and Poleway took sixth (1:00.18) for a combined five points. In the last event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Dartmouth came in second place (1:36.77), touching less than a second behind BC.

The Green have a short turnaround, hosting Connecticut at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

It was good that Matt DeNave decided to opt out of the 50 yard freestyle to preserve the pool record in its final meet

Interesting no mention of Matthew Denave’s 200-yard Butterfly. Truly an impressive swim and this wasn’t even his focus meet.
