The final score was 196-95 in favor of the orange and brown. The Falcons won 13 out of 16 events in the battle of I-75. Sophomore Diver Claire Stam had an NCAA qualifying score in the 3-meter diving event, Victoria Griffin won al three individual events that she swam, and backstroker specialist, Maya Skorupski, had a personal in-season best time in the 100 yard backstroke.

NCAA Qualified
Sophomore, Claire Stam, recorded an NCAA qualifying score in the 1-meter diving event. The Falcon scored a 278.55, and after the meet was over she commented “On 1-meter I got a 278.55, which is an NCAA qualifying score. I felt really good about my dives. I feel like I can definitely improve. I can increase my difficulty a little bit, but I felt really good in the water today”. First year head diving coach, and BGSU hall of famer Phil Koester, also commented on Claire’s performance, he stated “Claire did a really nice job today. She went her highest six-dive score of the year and is now qualified for the NCAA qualifying meet”.

Griffin In, Griffin Wins
Senior, Victoria Griffin, swam three individual events at the meet and she won every single one of them. Her first appearance of the night was as the anchor of the 200 yard medley relay. The Rockets ended up winning the event with a cumulative 1:46.01, while the Falcons finished second stopping the clock at 1:48.27. Regardless, Griffin had the fastest split in the event, recording a 23.11 in her 50 freestyle. Griffin’s first individual event was he 200 freestyle, in which the Falcon touched the wall at 1:51.12, winning the event by over two seconds. Then it came the 50 freestyle, in which she took the win at 23.94. The final individual appearance from the senior came in the 100 yard freestyle, in which the Pennsylvania native stopped the clock at 51.53 to win, once again, with a lead of over two seconds. Lastly, the 4×100 freestyle relay was a close finish, but the senior had, once again, the fastest split of the event at 51.77. The Falcons took the event with a cumulative 1:48.00.

Coach’s Input
Entering his second year as head coach for the BGSU swimming and diving program is coach Mat Ense, who shared his input about the meet, he commented “I thought tonight we came out with a lot of energy for our first dual meet of the season. It was the first time that we were keeping score at the meet, so to see the freshmen get up and compete for the first time and compete with the Bowling Green cap on was pretty special for me to see as a head coach welcoming the freshmen to the dual meet season. I saw some great things when we were in the water. I saw some in-season personal best times, saw some fo the divers break personal best records. On the 1-meter I saw Claire Stam get an NCAA zone qualifying score. I thought this was an impressive way to start off the season. I also thought Maya Skorupski showed some great senior leadership tonight going an in-season best time in the 100 backstroke, and just being off of her lifetime best time in the 200 backstroke. She has been working really hard on her mid-distance backstroke and it really showed tonight”.

The Falcons will be back in action at Xavier on Oct. 28 starting at 5 P.M. The next home meet for the Falcons will be on Nov. 11 at 6 P.M. in Cooper Pool as they take on Michigan State.
