Bowling Green tops Youngstown State

The Bowling Green Falcons won nine of 16 events, punctuating several of those wins with event sweeps, to top the Youngstown State Penguins 177-122.

The Falcons opened the day with a sweep of the 200 medley relay. The “B” team of Franziska Wohlert, Daniela Carrillo, Kayla Effinger, and Anna Babinec hit the wall with a 1:46.54. including a 24.98 butterfly split from Effinger.

The “C” relay of Maya Skorupski, Carmen Young, Jordan Bullock, and Sadie Ahlers took second with a 1:47.81, and the “A” team of Haley Roberts, Kristin Filby, Maria Galic, and Hannah Newman followed close behind with a 1:48.09.

The next sweep came in the 100 breaststroke was swept by the trio of Carrillo, Young, and Stephanie Boyle in 1:04.96, 1:07.87, and 1:08.25, respectively.

The third sweep came in the 200 backstroke. Wohlert led the way with a 2:03.25 and was followed in by Maya Skorupski in 2:09.70, and Erica Nieminen in 2:10.55.

Wohlert also won the 100 backstroke with a 57.30, using a stronger second 50 than second place Ashley Dow of Youngstown State, who led at the 50, 28.00 to 28.19, but finished in 57.97.

Carrillo scored another win in the Falcon sweep of the 200 breaststroke, leading the way with a 2:23.08. Filby took second with a 2:24.74, and Boyle took another third in 2:25.16.

Bowling Green took the top five spots in the 200 yard IM, with Victoria Griffin leading the way in a 2:08.13. Bullock was second with a 2:11.17, and Filby took another third place finish with a 2:11.66. Carrillo and Boyle took fourth and fifth in 2:13.91 and 2:14.04, respectively.

Bullock would win the 200 butterfly in 2:09.16, outlasting Madison Aranda of Youngstown State, who took second with a 2:09.26.

Victoria Orosz provided a bright spot for the Penguins, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:52.41, 100 freestyle in 52.89, and 500 freestyle in 5:-6.92. Orosz beat Bowling Green swimmers in all three events, Griffin (1:53.92) in the 200, Babinec (56.01) in the 100, and Natalie Criswell (5:11.58) in the 500.

Youngstown State also won the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:39.04 from the team of Kolbrun Jonsdottir, Jana Hanson, Chelsea Malone, and Orosz. That team topped all four of the Bowling Green teams, although that would not be enough to top the Falcons.
