Lauren Sullivan, who just completed her senior year at Bowling Green State University, is yet another swimmer who has been awarded the prestigious NCAA post graduate scholarship for the spring semester.
Sullivan graduated from Bowling Green with a 4.0, and a major in Communication Sciences and Disorders and a minor in Psychology. She was also apart of the SAAC executive board, NSSLHA, the undergraduate student government, and completed two individual research studies.
Sullivan is planning to attend Northeastern University to earn her masters in speech-language pathology, and while studying, she will also be staying involved with swimming as the graduate assistant swim coach. Sullivan specialized in backstroke and freestyle during her years at Bowling Green, and she was a multi-time scorer at the Mid-American Conference championships, including a 7th place finish in the 200 back and three relay swims at this year’s championships.
Every year, the NCAA awards up to 126 one-time postgraduate scholarships of $10,000 to student athletes who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. Those scholarships are divvied up by season, with just 21 men and 21 women receiving the scholarships each season.
According to the NCAA website,
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage graduate education by rewarding the Association’s most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership are evaluated. An equitable approach is employed in reviewing an applicant’s nomination form to provide all student-athlete nominees an opportunity to receive the graduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through graduate study.
Each school can nominate student athletes. Recipients must have a 3.2 GPA, and the scholarships are awarded after evaluating recipients academics, athletic contribution, and involvement in the school and the community. You can read more about the postgraduate scholarship here.
