Brandon Fiala of Virginia Tech has been named the 2016 ACC Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced today. He led a team of 49 athletes named to the2016 All-ACC Academic Men’s Swimming Team.
Fiala was named the Most Valuable Swimmer of this season’s ACC Championships after winning the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke and placing 2nd in the 100 breaststroke.
To qualify for the team, athletes must have a minimum 3.0 GPA for the previous semester, as well as a cumulative 3.0 for their academic career as undergraduates. Those GPAs are combined with athletic achievements and the team is selected.
There were no 4-time honorees on this year’s team, but Fiala and North Carolian State’s Derek Hren were both named to the team for the third time in their careers. Both are juniors and will have a shot at a 4-peat next season.
