Tonight at the Big 8 Championship Meet at American River College in Sacramento, Diablo Valley College’s (DVC) Brandon James broke the national junior college record in the finals of the Men’s 200 back. James posted a 1:45.18, breaking the national mark of 1:45.19 set in March by Stefan Stojmenovic of Indian River State College of Florida at the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships.

James will look to better his record at the The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Championships which will be held in East Los Angeles College on April 30th – May 2nd.
DVC emerged from the 2015 Big 8 Swimming Championships with the overall men’s team title, and Santa Rosa Jr. College took the women’s team title. Meet results may be found here.

Great swim Brandon! It was so fun to watch you break this record!! You are a talented swimmer and will accomplish great things in your swimming career. It was so fun to cheer for you and to be able to witness this race!
Totally agree with JoMa, Great swim Brandon and can’t wait to see where your swim career goes. People like swimfan need to chill and give these kids their props and quit trying to be such a stickler stalker. It’s obvious this kid has a promising future swimming where ever he swims – stop being such a snob. Some kids take different paths but somehow wind up getting there all the same. DVC has turned out many talented athletes who have been recruited to highly competitive college conferences and yes swimfan gone on to compete at NCAA Champs. Good luck Brandon and DVC keep up the good work. We appreciate all DVC does for their swimmers and wish them continued success.
…..by the way – Brandon was not the only DVC swimmer to set records at that meet. Too bad the rest of the athletes who set and reset records didn’t get a nod!
I understand Swimfans just sayin comments. It is true and facts are the facts, but I’m absolutely sure that Brandon being a very good backstroker, knows all about Ryan Murphy, and like every other backstroker out there, probably knows his splits. And I’m fairly certain Brandon James would not compare himself to Ryan and knows where he is at as well as every top backstroker in the country that Ryan Murphy is the best in the country and possibly more , come Rio. Brandon looks like a classic “late bloomer” with a big upside and definitely “on the recruiting radar” for major Division 1 programs. But please “pump the brakes” on how big that upside is. Murphy is about 9 seconds faster in the 200 Back and while Brandon’s 1:45 now is excellent, to teach the “A Final” at the NCAA championships, it would take a swim in the 1:38-1:39 range and to reach the “B Final” it would take a swim in the 1:40-1:41 range. Those are do-able targets but right now there must be 40+ swimmers who have NCAA qualifying times that are faster than 1:45.18. Just sayin’

Start with the understanding that people posting on this board know a little about swimming and are offering their informed opinions. If you can’t communicate your point without engaging in personal attacks, you’ll be the one looking like a fool.
Congratulations to Brandon and his record! Just want to point out to those that are unaware, that the governing body Brandon is in is the CCCAA while Stefan swam in the NJCAA. Brandon did in fact not break Stefan’s record even though he broke his time.
