Brazil Announces Full 2011 Pan American Games Roster

As their Winter National Championship, the Jose Finkel Trophy, gets underway, Brazil has announced their squad for the 2011 Pan American Games that will begin in mid-October in Guadalajara, Mexico.Brazil is known for sending a very strong team to the Pan Am Championships every year, especially on the men’s side. At the last edition of the meet, in 2007, the Brazilians took 10 of the 16 pool-swimming medals awarded on the men’s side.

The stars for this Brazilian squad will be Cesar Cielo and Thiago Pereira on the men’s side and Fabiola Molina on the women’s side. Reaching a little deeper into the men’s side, watch for Bruno Fratus who is the heir apparent to Cielo’s Brazilian sprint throne, and the former University of Michigan standoud Andre Schultz.

Sitting this meet out will be Auburn sprinter Marcelo Chierighini. Like it does for many NCAA stars, this meet comes at a tough time in the school year, especially in the fall semester where many swimmers load up on their tougher academic classes. Also absent from the Brazilian roster are the three other Brazilians aside from Cesar Cielo who tested positive for the banned diuretic furosemide at Maria Lenk. Vinicius Waked is serving a one-year ban (this was a second offense for him), while Nicholas dos Santos and Henrique Barbosa lost their qualifying times as a part of their “warning-only” suspension.
