Brazil took home the most medals at the inaugural Pan American Sports Festival which concluded yesterday. The event was held in various venues in Mexico over the last three months and included 23 Olympic events.
The festival was created to prepare Pan American athletes for both the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
The swimming events were held from September 26th-30th and included swimmers 18 years and younger.
The top five teams in the swimming events included:
- Brazil (18 gold/4 silver/2 bronze) – 24
- Canada (5 gold/11 silver/6 bronze) – 22
- Venezuela (4 gold/2 silver/4 bronze) – 10
- Argentina (2 gold/5 silver/7 bronze) – 14
- Mexico (2 gold/1 silver/3 bronze) – 6
15 year old Gabrielle Goncalves Roncatto of Brazil collected five individual golds winning the 100, 200 and 400 freestyle as well as the 200 and 400 IM. 16 year old Brandonn Pierry Cruz De Almedia was collected four individual golds for the Brazilians taking the 200 backstroke, 400 freestyle as well as the 200 and 400 IM.
Both 18 year old Christian Delgado of Venezuela and 17 year old Kylie Masse of Canada came away with multiple gold. Delgado took the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle while Masse won both the 100 and 200 backstroke.
