Brazil Tops the Medal Standings with Seven Gold

Brazil ended the final day of the World Short Course Championships with a huge medal haul collecting four more gold. Cesar Cielo started Brazil’s day off by winning the 100 freestyle. Etiene Medeiros then took the women’s 50 backstroke in a new world record. Felipe Silva won the men’s 50 breaststroke and they finished day with the Brazilian men winning the 4 x 100 medley relay.

In 2010 Brazilians placed seventh with three gold, one silver and four bronze and placed 15th in 2012 with one gold and two bronze.

The Hungarians did the majority of their damage in the first four days of competition. Katinka Hosszu picked up a silver and bronze on the final day of competition.

In 2010 the Hungarians placed 15th with one silver and two bronze while in 2012 they were third with three gold, four silver and three bronze.

The Dutch had a very good final evening first breaking the world record in the women’s 4 x 50 freestyle relay followed by a 50 meter freestyle win by Ranomi Kromowidjojo and a bronze medal finish for Femke Heemskerk in the women’s 200 freestyle.

In 2010 the Netherlands finished sixth with three gold, two silver and one bronze while 2012 they did not field a team that won a medal.

Only 2 gold medals for the US…although they one as many silver as the rest of the top 10 teams combined

Not bad for a US team whose swimmers average out to be roughly a B team.
