Brazilian Distance Powerhouses Making Noise With National Records

The Paulista Championships are going on this weekend in Santos, Brazil and distance powerhouses are breaking records. Brazilian 18-year old Guilherme Pereira da Costa broke the South American record for the third time in the 1500 free with a 15:02.18 and Joanna Maranhão broke the Brazilian record in her 1500m free.

Guilherme Pereira da Costa broke his own record which he set back in April this year.  The Brazilian record was a 15:05.23 which he saved over 3 seconds off of to set the new Brazilian and South American record of 15:02.18.  Before Pereira da Costa put his name in the books earlier this year Brandnonn Almeida held the Brazillian record at 15:11.70 from the 2015 Pan American Games. Ecuador’s Esteban Enderica swam the South American record at the 2016 South American Championships in a time of 15:08.57.

Joanna Maranhão set her own Brazilian record at the same meet in a time of 16:26.63.  The previous record was held by Poliana Okimoto at 16:26.90. Maranhão is now the Brazilian record holder in the 400, 800, and 1500 meter free and the 200 and 400 meter IM. She has broken Brazilian records 27 times in multiple events in her career.
