A continentall records and a big upset highlighted the first day of the 2016 Jose Finkel Trophy – Brazil’s Short Course Meters National Championship meet and Short Course World Championships selection event.

Manuella Lyrio broke the Brazilian and South American Records in the 200 free, swimming a 1:54.76 in finals to improve her 1:55.90 in prelims, and the old record of 1:56.43 from 2009. The top three swimmers (Larissa Oliveira in 1:55.59, and Rafaela Raurich in 1:56.33) were all under the old Brazilian and South American Records.

That race opened the day, and the surprise came just one event later in the men’s 200 free final, where 18-year old GNU swimmer Fernando Scheffer swam 1:43.39 to upset Nicolas Oliveira (1:43.60) for the title. Both swimmers will advance to swim the race at the World Championships in December in Canada.

Schaffer’s previous lifetime best in that race was a 1:47.8, marking a four-and-a-half second improvement for the teenager.

Other Day 1 winners:

  • Unsanta’s Andrea Eliana Berrino won the women’s 100 back. Etiene Medeiros was on the start lists for prelims in the event, but wound up scratching out of the heats. She’s the defending World Champion in the 50 back, which is yet to be held later this week.
  • Veteran Guilherme Guido of Pinheiros won the men’s 100 back in 50.70. His club had 5 swimmers in the A final f the race, including the top three finishers.
  • Viviane Jungblut won the women’s 1500 free in 16:21.59. This race is not contested at the Short Course World Championships.
  • Unisanta, swimming out of the first heat of the men’s 200 free relay, won in 1:26.45. Pinheiros came close, but just short, in heat 2 in 1:25.56.
  • SESI won the women’s 200 free relay in 1:38.93, which breaks the Championship Record. The aforementioned Medeiros did participate in that race, so she is at the meet despite scratching her second-best event.
