Brazilian sprinter Pedro Spajari took it upon himself to distribute food to families in “socially vulnerable situations” amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he posted on Instagram Sunday (translated from Portuguese).
The 23-year-old and his friend Bruno Rezende de Almeida, a triathlete, left their hometown (despite the recommendation to stay home) to make the deliveries.
“Today we did the little we can do in the midst of this crisis!
Despite the recommendation to stay at home, we left the city of Mococa, with all possible care to distribute basic food baskets to families in socially vulnerable situations!
Happy to be able to help, but sad to know that we still have so many needy families even in such a small town!
For those who can, stay at home!
For those who can, help!Although we are separated, we need to be more together than ever!
Not to mention this great friend who accompanied me, he helped me and the principal was part of that idea, and it was only the beginning, thank you brother.”
Brazil is currently experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases. Wednesday, for the second day in a row, the country saw 200-plus deaths and has more than 28,000 confirmed cases overall (1,736 deaths total).
Spajari was a member of Brazil’s sixth-place 4×100 freestyle relay at the 2019 FINA World Championships, helping to qualify the team for Tokyo. He also won gold on that relay at the 2019 Pan American Games, as well as silver as 4×100 medley relay prelims swimmer, and took fifth in the 50 free individually.
What a kind thing to do! Right, we are separated but all together!
