The distribution of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and fifth-years for this year’s meet is about what you would expect—seniors and juniors having the most qualifiers, with sophomores next up and then freshmen trailing (but not by much). Graduate seniors have significantly fewer qualifiers than the rest of the classes, but that’s expected given there aren’t as many of them.

CLASS SCORING
When we break down the classes by projected scoring based on the psych sheets, the seniors lead the way with 460 points, and perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the sophomores outpace the juniors by 23 points despite having seven fewer swimmers.
Update: Leah Shackley was initially missing from the freshman scoring list. With her addition, first-years are just half a point shy of the juniors with 397.5 points.
Fifth-years project to score the fewest points of all the classes, but have the highest points-per-swimmer average at 9.39.
I believe this designation in the USA Swimming database began when they needed to separate teams that are in different conferences for men than they were for women, and has just hung on for no reason in particular.

If Torri is listed as junior, should Curzan be a sophomore? That is how she was listed in the ACC Championships. Also, for Jillian Cox? Should she be a freshman since she deferred?
It’s what they are listed by their schools I believe! I think they both took redshirts officially? (Or did cox defer I know they all mean something different)
Honestly? We didn’t manhandle these too much, we went with the official designations they were given.
Yes Claire should be a redshirt sophomore, but technically redshirts aren’t given until the end of the regular years, so technically they’re both wrong and right, depending on which bucket you’re in.

Shouldn’t Leah Shackley be listed as a potential Fr scorer?
I think you caught a typo in the Freshman table TomA. Projected scores were calculated based on seeding, so Shackley should be listed in the table with a value of “44”. Projected score isn’t based upon what SwimSwam author/editor thinks is actually going to happen.
Lots of swimmers felt pain and penalty during the Covid year, but most didn’t get to train for 5 years in college. Rather, they had their college training opportunities limited due to the 5th years, and now due to roster cuts. They would give anything to train on their team for 5 years. Instead, they have to decide if they will quit swimming or transfer to another school if they can even find a spot.
Didn’t this group get to have a more or less normal freshman season? People were masking I guess, but they got to train and compete for that whole year from what I remember.

I am a little surprised that the number of qualifiers (excluding 5th year) is so evenly distributed, in my mind it would been even higher for the Jr’s and Sr’s.
yeah i think youre right — a few ppl broke out during covid (torri and curzan come to mind) but it’s actually kinda striking how often theres a peak in 2019 and regression afterwards (that many have yet to return from) when looking at swimcloud progressions.
James swam five years at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, specializing in the 200 free, back and IM. He finished up his collegiate swimming career in 2018, graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics. In 2019 he completed his graduate degree in sports journalism.
Prior to going to Laurentian, James swam …
What does (W) mean for SIU Swimmers?
That they’re on the women’s team.

No and no

Curzan is a sophomore
A redshirt sophomore, to be exact. But Virginia lists her as a junior, because that’s how they always roll with classes.
On their team websites, Curzan is listed as a sophomore and Cox a freshman.

Nope not projected to score
Shackley is listed on the psyche sheet as a freshman. 3rd, 4th and 6th for 44 points.
She’s 4th in the 100 fly, 6th in the 100 back and 3rd in the 200 back
Wait yeah doesn’t she have a 1:48 2back

Updated with Shackley, giving freshman 397.5 psych sheet points.
Can’t wait for no more fifth years, get a real job!
The penalty and pain they felt during their freshman COVID year more than paid for this extra year. Let’s not forget that.

It is a misconception that frosh women can’t carry their weight. No such thing as “only a freshwoman”.
I think you see the impact of Covid in the jr and sr classes – their development was likely impact by how Covid landed on them.
yeah i think youre right — a few ppl broke out during covid (torri and curzan come to mind) but it’s actually kinda striking how often theres a peak in 2019 and regression afterwards (that many have yet to return from) when looking at swimcloud progressions.
I think for the guys the numbers will climb by class but the woman don’t have as consistent improvement over 4 years
