Kleigh Koupal of York Town, Virginia’s Coast Guard Blue Dolphins has verbally committed to the University of Mary Washington Eagles for the 2016-2017 season.
Koupal competed in the Virginia Short Course Senior Championships last March, most notably posting a personal record 2:11.99 in 200 breaststroke prelims to make the C final. His best times (in SCY) are as follows:
- 100 BR: 1:02.07
- 200 BR: 2:11.99
- 200 IM: 2:01.45
- 400 IM: 4:12.25
- 50 FR: 23.53
- 100 FR: 50.20
- 200 FR: 1:49.61
- 500 FR: 4:50.03
Last season, led by coach Abby Brethauer, the University of Mary Washington men captured the Capital Athletic Conference championship and went on to place eighteenth at NCAA Division III Championships. Koupal should prove a real asset to the team, especially at the conference level; his best 400 IM time would have placed third this year at CAC Championships, and his 200 breaststroke would have nabbed fifth. He has some room to improve before making the A relays, though, as UMW junior Kenyon Huber-Wilker has gone 58.23 in the 100 breast.
Koupal’s Coast Guard Blue Dolphins teammate Carsen Mumford, another breaststroke and IMer, will be joining him at UMW.
