Breaststroker Joyce Wu Announces Commitment To Northeastern (2023)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Joyce Wu has announced her commitment to swim and study at Northeastern University this upcoming fall. Wu currently attends the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland, and swims year-round with Rockville Montgomery Swim Club.

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to Northeastern University! Coach Roy and his team have made me feel extremely welcomed and excited for my future in Boston. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the past few years, especially my family, friends, coaches, and teachers. GO, HUSKIES!!!

Wu is a former 10 and under National Age Group record holder as a member of Rockville Montgomery’s record-breaking 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay in 2015. Individually, she also ranks 6th and 7th all-time for 11-2 girls in the 50 and 100 breaststroke, respectively. Her age group accomplishments earned her invitations to attend the Eastern Zone Select Camp, the National Diversity Select Camp, and the NCSA Select Camp.

Wu’s best 100 breaststroke time of 1:02.22 was set in 2018 at the RMSC Holiday Invitational. Although she hasn’t quite matched that time since, she’s been as fast as 1:03.05 in the last two years. Her best 200 breast is more recent, having swum a 2:16.90 in December of 2021.

Although her breaststroke has hit a bit of a plateau, Wu has seen improvements in her fly and IM events. This spring, she notched a personal best time by a second in the 200 fly (2:09.17), and dropped a few tenths in the 100 fly (56.95). She also knocked over two seconds off in the 200 IM, hitting a 2:07.47 to win at the WMPSSDL Championships.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 breast – 29.19
  • 100 breast – 1:02.22
  • 200 breast – 2:16.90
  • 100 fly – 56.95
  • 200 fly – 2:09.17
  • 200 IM – 2:07.47

Northeastern University is an NCAA Division I mid-major program located in Boston, Massachusetts. The Huskies compete in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), where they finished 3rd out of 8 teams this year.

It took a 1:03.88 and a 2:19.62 to advance to crack the top-16 in the breaststroke events, meaning even with her more recent times, Wu is in a good position to be an immediate scorer. Leading Northeastern’s breaststroke squad this year was freshman Marcela Scaramuzza, who earned 10th in the 200 (2:17.82). Scaramuzza was disqualified in the 100 breast, but put up a season best time of 1:02.85.

Joining Wu in Northeastern’s class of 2027 is Texas native Mary Nordmann and Massachusetts native Bella Busconi. Nordmann is a sprint freestyler, while Busconi swims distance events.
