2012 Olympian Breeja Larson cleaned up in Lewisville, TX, at the 2017 Western Zone Sectionals this weekend. Out of her four wins, her big wins in the breaststroke were the most notable. Larson, who not long ago was tearing it up for the Texas A&M Aggies in the same state, posted a 58.15 to win the 100 breast and a 2:06.66 to take the 200 breast. The 24-year-old looked strong for a mid-March meet.
Larson was also the champion in the 200 IM (1:57.70) and 50 free (22.62). Other big swims on the girls’ side came from Highlands Ranch Aquatics’ Alex Reddington and Wasatch Front Fish Market’s Rhyan White, who each won two races apiece. Reddington took first in the 100 fly (54.80) and then in the 200 fly (1:58.21). White, meanwhile, went 53.36 for a new best time and first in the 100 back, then added another top time with 1:57.19 to take the 200 back.
Three high school senior boys won the majority of the events on the boys’ side of the meet. Taking four wins was Pikes Peak Athletics’ Daniel Carr, who has committed to swim for the Cal Golden Bears next year. Carr swept the backstrokes, going 46.74 for his first time under 47 and taking two hundredths off of his 200 time with a 1:42.71. He won the 100 free (44.03) and the 200 IM (1:45.94) as well, notching new bests in both.
Harvard commit Michael Zarian of the Jeffco Hurricanes and Arizona commit Brooks Fail of Texas Ford Aquatics both had three wins apiece this weekend in Lewisville. Zarian took first in the 100 fly (47.98) and 200 fly (1:45.22), then blasted a 3:48.58 to win the 400 IM, going best times in all three races. Fail, meanwhile, won three freestyle races. He went 1:36.69 in the 200 free, 4:22.73 in the 500 free, and 15:03.57 in the mile, going best times across the board there.
Fail also swam the 200 back and 200 fly at this meet. He touched 3rd in the 200 back (1:45.49), then the next event, went 1:46.97 in the 200 fly to finish 2nd behind Zarian. Fail beat both Carr and Zarian in the 500, though– Carr touched 2nd in 4:26.88 and Zarian was 3rd in 4:28.46. Carr also touched 2nd in the 400 IM (3:52.92), while Zarian was 2nd in the 200 IM (1:48.38).
Lilly King just yawned
Swimswam, does anyone know if she shaved and tapered?
Hswimmer – don’t know for sure. Intuition says that an Olympian is probably not doing a full shave/taper for a sectionals meet. Possible a 1-2 day drop taper.
Thanks!
I believe either Breeja’s 50 free time above is inaccurate or it was a 50 breast, please check & correct, thanks
Oops, was a 22.62, I just typed it wrong. Thanks for the catch!
To make Worlds, she needs to focus on 200 breast– needs to be going 2:23 low.
