Upper Mainline’s Brendan Burns moved up from the #4 to #2 15-16 all-time performer in the 100 back at YMCA Nationals Thursday night.
The 16-year-old split 22.37/23.87 for a final time of 46.24, over two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Justin Fleagle (48.80), and almost seven tenths faster than his previous best of 46.93. His time is also a new YMCA national record, breaking Austin Katz‘s former record of 47.06, set exactly a year ago today.
Burns now sits only behind Destin Lasco, who went 45.93 on March 30th. Both are now faster than current American record holder Ryan Murphy was at their age. Lasco remains the only 15-16 year-old ever under :46, and he and Burns are the only ever under 46.65.
Burns would have a chance to go even faster Saturday if he leads off the 400 medley relay.

I watched this in person and oh my god if someone can fix his bouncy stroke he will be much better.
You might want to say I’m exaggerating but I honestly think he can hang with the worlds best underwater, probably not in the swimming though.
It’s unlikely a 16 year old that probably still has a lot of maturing physically and ability to get stronger can hang with the best UW kickers in the world. 46.2 is a phenomenal time but he’s probably not at the same level as the worlds best although he could certainly get there down the road.
Why the down arrows? It is good if someone has things to fix in their stroke to get even faster isn’t it? That’s why we have coaches even at the highest level.
Amazing how now the top 3 times for 15/16 boys are all from Mid-Atlantic! Burns has more shot at Lasco’s record on Saturday if he leads off the 400 MR. I was at the pool tonight and was in awe of his walls!

What was his previous best time? Also this kid is HUGE, looking at him in person I would never guess that he’s only 16

Underwater monsters. Not to say Murphy is/wasn’t, but all these guys are crazy good at the 5th stroke
Having swum against Brendan, I can attest. In a league championship 500 free (He wasn’t even trying, he only swum like a 4:30 to easily beat everyone) he went to at least half way on every wall. His kick is just ridiculous.
I was actually in the same heat at states as Mike when he dropped the 46.6. There was another junior, Ryan Dudzinski, who lost to him by about a quarter of a second. I guess Ryan was 17 at the time though.
If it makes you feel any better, Mike is now at Cal, and since they didn’t need backstrokers when he got there, they started training him in butterfly. I think he was a 1:39 in the 2 at this past NCAAs.
Ryan Dudzinski is at Stanford, so two of them can keep battling. Ryan was/is also known for his underwaters. So much that – even though being a backstroker – he broke then-State record on 100 butterfly almost purely on strength of his underwaters.
