Division I Manhattan College has announced Brian Hansbury will be the next head coach of its men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.
“I wouldn’t be here without the support of Athletic Director Irma Garcia, Deputy Athletic Director Anthony Kurtin, and Senior Associate Athletic Director of Compliance Ann Gulino,” Hansbury said. “When I first met them and heard of their plan for Manhattan College and the swimming and diving program, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”
Most recently, Hansbury has been coaching at the club level, spending time as associate head coach of Empire Swimming sine 2019. Empire notably sent one swimmer to US Olympic Trials as Jack Kelly, who competes collegiately for Brown, swam under his club team. Kelly also swam for Empire at 2020(1) Wave I Trials. Manhattan announced that Hansbury will stay in his role with Empire while also joining Manhattan’s program.
Before arriving at Empire, Hansbury had numerous stints at other high schools and club teams. Hansbury was the head coach of GAEL Aquatic Club established by Iona University from 2007-2015. During that time span, he also served as a volunteer assistant with Iona. Before working with GAEL, Hansbury was the lead assistant for Iona from 2002-2007. He also coached at numerous high schools in New York including being the Head Coach of Iona Prep from 2000-2002 and Horace Greeley High School in 2001.
Hansbury grew up near Manhattan as he graduated from White Plains High School, which is about a 20-mile drive from Manhattan’s campus. Hansbury remains the school record holder in the 200 and 500 freestyles.
He went on to swim collegiately for the University of Florida where he graduated in 1999 with a bachelor’s in history. Although Hansbury did not attend Manhattan, numerous family members are graduates of the college including his father, uncle, and two younger brothers.
“I feel it’s my turn to be a Jasper and I am thrilled to be given this amazing opportunity to lead and build the swimming and diving program here at Manhattan,” Hansbury said.
Hansbury takes over the Manhattan program that was led by Eric Rasmussen Jr. who was in his first season as head coach this past year. This past season, the Manhattan women finished 9th out of 10 teams at the Metro Atlantic Atletic Conference (MAAC) Championships while the men finished 9th out of 9 teams.
No mention of his amazing coaching tenure leading the stellar Div. 3 SUNY Purchase swimmers and divers! Guess it’s something you may wanna leave off the professional resume!
