British Summer Championships Bronze Medalist Sophia Wilson Sends Verbal to UVA

Sophia Wilson from Guildford, England, has announced her verbal commitment to the class of 2024 at the University of Virginia. This loaded class already includes verbal commits Abby Harter, Alex Walsh, Anna Keating, and Emma Weyant, all of whom are ranked among SwimSwam’s top 20 recruits from the high school class of 2020.

Wilson swims for the club team at Millfield School in the southwest of England in the county of Somerset. She has represented Great Britain as a member of the British Junior Team at various international meets in Italy, France, Canada, Netherlands, and the United States. Specializing in backstroke and IM, she recently won a bronze medal in the 17/18 200 back at the 2019 British Summer Championships in Glasgow. Her time of 2:14.36 in finals ranks her at number 14 in the UK for all ages this year. At the same meet she swam 1:03.06 in the 100 back, which is the 24th time of the season for the UK, and she finished sixth in the 17/18 final. She also placed fourth in the 17/18 200 IM final (2:19.08) and swam in heats of the 200 breast (2:38.91).

Wilson’s best times in the 200 IM and 400 IM date from the 2017 British Summer Championships in Sheffield, where she went 2:18.24 and 4:53.02, respectively, to win a pair of gold medals in the 16-year-olds age category.

Wilson could develop into an IM threat for the Hoos with a converted 400 time that is less than a second shy of what it took to make the B final at 2019 ACC Women’s Championships. She might also focus on breaststroke, where she would have scored in the C final at conference. It took 2:00.85 to score in the 200 IM, 54.13 in the 100 back, and 1:57.55 in the 200 back.

Wilson’s sister Alicia Wilson swims for Cal. She won the 200 IM for Great Britain, beating Ella Eastin 2:11.35 to 2:12.24, at this summer’s World University Games in Napoli.
