British Swimming Reveals Rosters For U23 & European Junior Championships

British Swimming has released its roster for both this summer’s inaugural LEN U23 Championships as well as the European Junior Championships. The former is set for Dublin, Ireland in August while the latter is coming to Belgrade, Serbia in July.

Leah Schlosshan of the City of Leeds and Eva Okaro of Sevenoaks appear on both rosters, giving the youngsters a busy schedule for the summer.

Schlosshan took gold in the girls’ 200m IM at last year’s European Junior Championships while Okaro raked in 50m free bronze at the 2021 edition of the annual event.

Ed Mildred also highlights the U23 lineup, with the 20-year-old already having added two European Championships relay medals to his resume.

On the U23 roster, British Swimming Head of Performance Development Alan Lynn said, “It is an exciting prospect to have put together a team that will compete at a completely new event – and one that will offer racing against world-class competitors in a big arena environment.

“The 18 athletes on this team have a blend of senior and junior experience, with some preparing for their first time in a GB cap and others heading to the meet off the back of the senior World Championships in Fukuoka. We know that each and every one of them can thrive in this big-meet environment and can also use the opportunity to progress their performances on the international stage, whether that is with the Olympic year of 2024 in mind or future international competitions beyond that.”

As to the Euro Jrs roster, Lynn stated, “The British Swimming Championships allowed our junior swimmers to showcase the best of their abilities ahead of what will be another productive year for those looking to make their way into the senior teams.

“We have selected a strong team with experience from across the junior competitions, who will all be aiming to move their performances on in what will be an unfamiliar arena in Belgrade.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do just one year out from Paris and five years out from LA 2028.”

Surprised that Blocksidge was nominated for the junior championships. I thought that only athletes born in 2005, 2006 or 2007 would be allowed to enter. I would have expected her to be nominated for the U23 championships (which only is restricted to athletes born in 2000 or later as far as I know).

The Junior category is 14 to 18 now and as she turned 14 this year she’s eligible

The under 23s team is basically all the swimmers out of the performance centres that didn’t make worlds. I suppose they have to put them in a team when BS are paying for them to be in the centres

Very good teams but pretty ridiculous not to send the British 200 Fly champion who went a 3 second PB at British Champs Joshua Gammon (B.2003) to Euro u23’s.

Out of curiosity, as I am not fussed for completing the futile exercise-

How would Gammon fair in comparison to proximity of the times set, against others who were not selected(Slevin, Podger, Carswell, Smith etc.?

Don’t disagree others could have been added, particularly as there is space.

The U23 team looks quite weak but that was always going to be the case with so many competitions this year. Would liked to have seen Dean Fearn and Theodora Taylor at European Juniors also, excited about Jacob Mills in the sprint free

Theodora had a fab champs but fell victim to GBR having an unusually strong crop in her events. Four junior girls made the 100br A final at champs, and another won the ‘b’ final ahead of Theodora. We also had four markedly faster in the 50fr, all of whom were selected. There was sadly no room for her on the plane, her events are full.
