- Start Lists
This year’s edition of the Sydney Open is almost upon us with Australia’s arsenal of talent descending upon Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre beginning on Friday, May 12th.
Olympic champions Kyle Chalmers, Zac Stubblety-Cook and Kaylee McKeown are among the top contenders ready to rumble ahead of next month’s World Championsips Trials.
However, Bronte Campbell is also among the entrants, expected to race in her first competition since the 2020 Olympic Games.
Representing the Cruize Swim Club out of Canberra, 28-year-old Campbell is entered in the women’s 50m free and 100m free events.
A two-time world champion in 2015 and 3-time Olympic medalist, Campbell has been riddled with injuries in the last few years of her storied career.
She indeed helped the green and gold take the top prize in the women’s 4x100m free relay, as well as contributed to the Aussies’ mixed medley relay bronze in Tokyo. However, a shoulder injury prevented her from competing at the 2021 International Swimming League (ISL) playoffs for Team LA Current.
‘C2’ also opted out of the 2022 long course and short course World Championships, as well as the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Most recently she was sighted along with Olympic champion sister Cate Campbell at Australian National Team Event Camp on the Gold Coast in February of this year.
Key Entrants for 2023 Sydney Open
- Bond – Minna Atherton, Milla Jansen, Cassie Wild, Ben Armbruster, Maddy Gough, Thomas Hauck, Flynn Southam, Laura Taylor
- Chandler – Leah Neale, Ella Ramsay, Zac Stubblety-Cook
- New Zealand – Helena Gasson
- Griffith – Joshua Edwards-Smith, Bowen Gough, Mack Horton, Kaylee McKeown, Lani Pallister, Cody Simpson, Brendan Smith
- Marion – Kyle Chalmers, Meg Harris, Matt Temple, Madi Wilson
- SOPAC – Matt Wilson, William Yang
21.85 for McEvoy. Seems a pretty sure bet for the 50 at trials.
Edit: Simpson looks like he’s getting back on track with a 52.5 in the 100 fly heats after being only 53 something in the final at nationals.
Thanks Troy.
24.95 for C2
Not a bad comeback! Apparently not swimming finals as she has a wedding to go to.
I hope she comes back for the 100 on Sunday.
I read an article saying she only swimming 50 heats this meet.
Yep, but hopefully she changed her mind because she is entered in the 100.
Reread article & says only Friday morning, so may return Sunday, sorry.

Bronte Campbell Back On Deck For 2023 Sydney Open and UNISPORT Nationals
Bronte Campbell, the younger half of Australian swimming’s legendary sisters of speed, will spend around 26 seconds in the water racing at the famed Sydney Olympic Pool on Friday morning
Before the entry list was published she did say on a podcast that she’ll only swim the 50 here so you weren’t entirely wrong.
St Peters are on another training camp this time in Cairns, so are missing. Jenna Strauch doesn’t seem to be swimming, nor C1 – I haven’t been following Cate closely, but thought she might have swam this weekend to get another race under her belt before trials.
McKeon’s absence isn’t surprising, her brother David is getting married on Saturday, which also explains Cody only swimming on Friday, good timing with the 1Fly.
Nice to also see Edwards-Smith swimming too, he wasn’t listed on the initial start list.
C1 is doing Mare Nostrum this weekend.
On Cate’s “Here if you need” podcast Bronte indicated she was only swimming the 50.
Great to hear Bronte Campbell is back in the water. The break with injuries could not have been timed better.
Hopefully we will see Bronte swimming a 200m. Always saw that as a training event that she swam well in. Welcome back!😁
The stream for this meet is a bit of a rip off at $15.99. 💩
Some gossip from a recent podcast:
C1 is now training under Vince Raleigh at Chandler.
Seebohm is back training with Bohl in prep for Paris.
I heard this too. I was shocked to hear Seebohm hasn’t retired. She’s done 3 reality shows since Tokyo and entered zero swimming events.
I think her shot at the 100 is gone. Mollie was a 58.42 at Nationals and Seebohm hasn’t been that fast since 2015. However Seebohm’s 200 from Tokyo (2:06.1) is significantly faster than any other currently active Aussie behind Kaylee so that’s still very much in reach.
It really depends on what program Mollie decides to swim which will depend on what her best medal prospects are after trials next year and how confident she is that she can do the 200 free final after swimming the 100 back semi not long before. It’s a shame the 200 free final isn’t before the 100 back semi.
Jaclyn Barclay might be in contention next year too
Very true. There’s always the chance that Atherton finds her form again too but unfortunately it’s not looking likely at this point.
Does anyone know what actually happened to Atherton? Is it injury?
It was said during nationals that she withdrew because of an injury (knee I think?) but the rest of the time since 2019? No idea.
I know she’s said in the past that she wanted to get into commentating after her sporting career so after she commentated age nationals I just assumed that it was further confirmation of an unofficial retirement so its nice to hear that thats not the case especially because she does have a good chance of making it in the 200 and theres a great chance she’d then be used in the medley relay heats as well
Sure is a rip-off. You can get a month’s worth of Binge, which has tons of content and better picture quality, for just one cent more. Also, the commentating on these video streams of less important swimming meets is usually either very poor or nonexistent.
Yes I was shocked at the price.
About damn time…just what Australia desperately needs now is another women’s sprint freestyler
Only two years ago people were saying that Australian women were over in sprint freestyle once McKeon and C1 and C2 retired. Then last year the girls won the relay in a time faster than any other country has ever swum without any of those 3.
I would prefer a sprint breaststroker but you can never have too many sprint freestylers haha.
not to mention that if everyone swims at their best at junior worlds then they’ll have a chance at the ruck/oleksiak/sanchez/smith 4×1 wjr
I am guessing this has been discussed somewhere on the site, so please send me the link. There was no Olympics in 2020. There was a Summer Olympics held in 2021. So, why is it so often referred to as the 2020 Olympics? I have seen it written both ways on this site, but, I feel like 2020 is listed more often. History is always going to show that it was held in 2021, so should it not be called that?
Thank you for the link in advance.

Because the official name of the event never changed, despite the postponement. It is still referred to in many places (not just here) as the 2020 Olympics.
The name of the event was still Tokyo 2020 so that’s what it’s called.
In 50 years “what year were the 2020 Olympic Games held” will be a trivial pursuit question
The official name is still 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Kindly post way-off-topic questions like that in the American or Canadian swimming threads. Leave the Aussie swimming threads alone.
However, Bronte Campbell is also among the entrants, expected to race in her first competition since the 2020 Olympic Games.
It takes reading the article to see that the topic I asked about is in there. I was able to find it for you so that you don’t need to take all that time.
This was a legitimate question on my part and clearly mentioned the topic I asked about. Enjoy your trolling.
