The Brown men’s swimming & diving team won the Bruno Invitational on Sunday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center with a total score of 1079.5. Princeton (918) and Columbia (6668.5) rounded out the top-three finishers. Brown’s victory over the Princeton is the first time since the 1960-61 season the Bears have defeated the Tigers in a dual meet.

“We are excited to win our Bruno Invite,” said head coach Chris Ip. “It’s special to represent Brown University at home. Within the meet we also tallied two dual meet wins over Princeton and Dartmouth. Our men stepped it up each session and never wavered and I attribute this to our senior leadership. ”

“This is a great mid-season snapshot of where our program stands in our training cycles,” said Ip. “We know we have much more to do if we want to move up in the Ivy League but this gives our team the confidence that we are on track.”

Junior Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) opened the third day with a third-place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:43.04, first in dual meet scoring. Sophomore Matt Orringer (Ann Arbor, Mich.) took seventh in the event (15:58.25).

Freshman Coley Sullivan (Lousiville, Ky.) turned in a second-place finish and NCAA B qualifying time of 1:45.49 in the 200 backstroke, posting a lifetime best. Senior Nicholas Johnston (Pleasanton, Calif.) also finished fourth (1:48.27) while sophomore Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) came in at eighth (1:51.10). Junior Talbot Jacobs (Orinda, Calif.) dropped a second from his morning swim to place 12th with a time of 1:52.41.

Senior Daniel Klotz placed second in the 100 freestyle, first in dual meet scoring with a NCAA B qualifying time of 44.00, which was also a personal best and third-best in program history. Freshman Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) was right behind Klotz, in third (second dual), also with a NCAA B time of 44.27 and fourth best all-time at Brown. Cline (44.70) and sophomore Charles Steele (Katy, Texas) (45.38) earned points in the A-Final, with both swimmers posing a lifetime best. Freshman Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) won the B-final in 45.13. Freshman Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) took 12th in 45.49 and Hollowsky took 15th with a lifetime best 46.18.

Sophomore Carson Christuk (Newbury, Mass.) finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a lifetime best time of 2:01.77, while sophomore Waylon Jin (Berwyn, Pa.) came in fourth (2:03.10) and freshman Toshiki Takahashi (Tokyo, Japan) finished fifth (2:03.31).

Junior Riley Springman (Orlando, Calif.) finished third in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 1:48.14. Grant placed eighth in the event (1:53.79). Sophomore William Steele (1:52.18) and senior Will LaCosta (1:53.57) placed 12th and 13th in the B-final.

A team of Stephens, Cline, C. Steele and Smilenov  won the 400 freestyle to close out the meet with a time of 2:57.73, besting the second-place time by almost four seconds and breaking the school record of 2:57.82 set in 2008. Brown’s B team of Sulivan, Sung, Hollowsky and senior Jack Nee (Pepper Pike, Ohio) took fifth (3:02.17).

The Bears will next compete at Penn on Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14. The two-day meet is scheduled to being at 12:00 p.m. on both days with Penn and Harvard competing in addition to Brown.
