Joon Sung, who swims for Loyola High School in Los Angeles, California, as well as BLAST Sharks, has made a verbal commitment to join the Brown University class of 2020* next fall.
Sung is a CIF-Southern Section record-holder; he was a member of the Loyola relay that broke the Division I record at the 2014 section meet. This past May, he contributed to Loyola’s third-place team finish with a fifth in the 50 free (21.19), a seventh in the 100 fly (50.08), and a 45.68 leadoff on Loyola’s 400 free relay.
Sung competed in the 50m free, 200m free, and 100m fly at 2015 Summer Juniors in San Antonio. Most recently, he achieved five personal bests at the mid-season Kevin Perry Invitational this past weekend: 100y free (45.21), 100y back (51.51), 100y fly (48.86), 100m fly (56.46), and 200y fly (1:51.12).
So far the only one of his times that would score at Ivy League Men’s Championships is the 200 fly (C-final) but with the improvement he has achieved since last year, Sung should be able to contribute to Brown’s efforts from the outset.
*DISCLAIMER: Sung has not yet been officially accepted to Brown. As is true with all Ivy League schools, Brown’s Admission Office will not send its acceptance letter until the beginning of December, along with those of all Early Action candidates. The procedure for a recruited athlete like Sung is for Admissions to review his transcript and SAT scores, “support his application for admissions in the fall,” issue a Likely Letter, then offer him acceptance into the class of 2020.
