Bruce Gemmell Wins Third Consecutive ASCA Coach Of The Year Award

Bruce Gemmell is climbing the ranks of the greatest coaches in history with his third consecutive ASCA Coach of the Year award. He is the second coach in history to be named ASCA Coach of the Years three consecutive years. The only other coach that has won three consecutive Coach of the Year awards is Texas’ Longhorns coach Eddie Reese.

Gemmell was honored today in Cleveland at the ASCA World Clinic, beating out Bob Bowman and David Marsh for the award. Both Bowman and Marsh were named the head coaches of the 2016 Olympic Swim Teams this week as well.

Gemmell is the primary coach of Katie Ledecky, the 2015 FINA Swimmer of the meet at the recent FINA World Championship and the head coach of Nation’s Capital Swim Club. Ledecky won five Gold medals in Kazan, winning every individual freestyle event ranging from the 200 freestyle to the 1500 freestyle. She was also a member of the winning 4×200 freestyle relay. She also broke three world records over the course of the week-long championship meet.

With Ledecky choosing to defer her enrollment at Stanford until after the Olympics, Gemmell will have an opportunity to earn ASCA’s coach of the Year award for the fourth consecutive year next year. Gemmell started working with Ledecky after the 2012 Olympics and has helped develop her into the best distance swimmer in the world.

Congrats to Bruce. I hope he will be an assistant coach for the Oly team 2016. Together Bruce and Ms. Ledecky will make history. It’s going to be a great show in Rio!
