The third day of the Sectionals meet in St. George, Utah featured the 200 back, 500 free, 100 breast, and 100 fly.

Brynn Sproul, a junior at Brigham Young University, swam to a win, and new lifetime best, in the 200 back to kick off the Saturday finals session. Sproul touched first in 1:55.38, dipping below 1:56.0 for the first time in her career. Her time would have been fast enough to win the 2021 MPSF Championships, a meet at which she finished third in 1:58.11

In the men’s event, University of Pittsburgh commit Austin Lane held off Quintin McCarty to finish with the top time of 1:46.22. That time is slightly faster than his previous best of 1:46.99 from 2019. McCarty finished second in 1:46.77.

Taking the top spot in the women’s 500 free was Rylie Lopez, who led the field by four seconds. The 18-year old from Bellingham Bay Swim Team touched in 4:52.58, just over five seconds off of her lifetime best. The second-place finish in the event went to 13-year old Madison Mintenko, who on Day 2 of the meet swam a 1:47.51 in the 200 free. Mintenko finished in 4:56.84.

Day 2’s 200 free champ, Michael Lincoln, a senior at Brown, claimed another event win in the men’s 500 free. Lincoln finished in 4:29.09, over six seconds ahead of runner-up Evan Vanbrocklin.

Abigail Maoz, who will be joining the LSU Tigers this fall, led the field by almost three seconds in the women’s 100 breast. Maoz touched in 1:01.07, over a second faster than her previous best of 1:02.20. On the men’s side, it was 17-year old Drew Kistler of the Spokane Waves Aquatic Team who finished with the fastest time. Kistler touched in 55.48, over .25 faster than his previous best of 55.75.

Swimming for the University of Denver Hilltoppers, Alexis Greenhawt won the 100 fly in a time of 54.60. Just behind her was 15-year old Camden Doane in 54.81, well below her previous lifetime best of 55.84 from last month. With her swim, Doane now ranks in the top-20 for 15-year old’s this year.

King Aquatic Club teammates Patrick Keough and William Oates finished off the day with a 1-2 finish in the men’s 100 fly. Keough came away with the fastest time of 47.54, while Oates wasn’t far behind in 47.80. While both finished with new best times, Oates dropped nearly a second and a half from his previous best of 49.23.

McCarty and Lane showed great sportsmanship shaking hands before and after the race. Swimming is a great sport and I’m glad things are starting to come back to semi normal for the kids. McCarty will be at NC State the following year and I’m sure these two will have many great future races as friendly competitors.
