BOSTON – The Boston University women’s swimming & diving team earned a 167-133 dual victory over Massachusetts in its home opener on Saturday afternoon at the FitRec Competition Pool.

Freshman Haley Newman made her home debut a memorable one, winning three events, while sophomore Ashley Scafetta took first in a pair of events.

Four juniors – Lara MitchellSumi CameronSydney Sorbello and Clarissa Hoyt – each one won event each.

Newman swept the butterfly events and added a win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:08.33. Her 200 butterfly time of 2:04.07 placed her first and her winning time in the 100 butterfly was 56.54 seconds.

Scafetta turned in the top time in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:33.96 before later finishing first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:06.34.

Mitchell won the 100 backstroke (56.26), Sorbello was first to the wall in the 50 free (24.16), Hoyt was tops in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.56) and Cameron posted a high score of 256.88 in the 3-meter dive.

Mitchell and Sorbello teamed up with sophomores Blythe Brenner and Sasha Ramey to take first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.85.

The Terriers will return to action next Saturday (Nov. 5) when they host Providence at 1:30 p.m.

BOSTON – The Boston University men’s swimming & diving team opened its home schedule on Saturday afternoon and posted a 173-125 dual victory over Massachusetts at the FitRec Competition Pool.

Freshman Tony Ponomarev won three events while senior Kyle Falkstrom, junior Justin Lee and sophomore Dolan Grisbaum won two events apiece.

Ponomarev made his home debut one to remember, sweeping the backstroke events before topping off the day with a win in the 200 IM in a time of 1:54.91. The freshman won the 100 backstroke in 51.12 seconds before posting a 1:51.93 in the 200 backstroke.

The breaststroke events both went to Falkstrom as the senior as he won the 100 in a time of 56.87 seconds and came out on top in the 200 (2:05.62).

The sprints belonged to Lee with winning times of 20.78 (50) and 46.51 (100) before he anchored a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:23.74) along with seniors Ethan Thomas and Jacob Lindner along with freshman Ben Cho.

Falkstrom, Lee and Lindner were part of a win in the 200 medley relay along with sophomore Keegan Duffy (1:33.23).

Grisbaum controlled the distance events, topping all competitors in the 1000 free with a time of 9:38.67 along with a victory in the 500 free (4:39.89).

The Terriers will return to the pool next Saturday (Nov. 5) when they host Providence at 1:30 p.m.

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team claimed 10 individual event wins and a relay title on Saturday against Boston University at the BU Aquatics Center. The Minutewomen fell to the Terriers 166-133 in the team scoring while the Minutemen were defeated by a score of 173-125.

Event Wins
The Minutewomen finished the day with five individual wins, beginning with a Beatriz Olivieri win in the 200 Free with a time of 1:53.00 to help score 14 points as Jane Denenberg and Anna Kwon added top-four finishes. Olivieri led three Minutewomen in the top-four of the 500 Free as well, winning her second event of the day with a time of 1:53.00. Caroline Mahoney paced a one-two UMass finish in the 100 Free with a top time of 52.82 while Maggie Desmond took second. Megan Mitchell recorded the final race win of the day with a time of 2:03.32 in the 200 Back.

The Minutemen recorded five individual event wins on the afternoon with Emerson Kiefer picking up the first in the 200 Free with a winning swim of 1:41.59 before going on to add a runner-up finish in the 500 Free. Grant Beebe led a one-two finish in the 100 Fly with Jamie MacDonald, clocking in the fastest time of 51.38 with MacDonald finishing at 52.31. MacDonald went on to lead another one-two finish for UMass, this time in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:53.85 to win while Sam Haddad took second.

Diving Results
Tommy Cotner claimed a pair of diving wins for the Minutemen, starting his day with a score of 276.00 to win the 3-Meter Dive before going on to win the 1-Meter Dive with a score of 291.90. Andrew Bell added a pair of runner-up finishes, scoring 273.68 in the 3-Meter and 291.15 in the 1-Meter.

Emma Petrovich won the 1-Meter Dive with a score of 265.65 and added a runner-up showing in the 3-Meter with a score of 255.53. Shreeya Sinha finished in fourth in the 3-Meter.

Top Finishes
Summer Pierce posted three runner-up finishes on the day, capping off the day with a time of 2:11.22 in the 200 IM. Pierce led two Minutewomen in the top-three of both the 200 Fly and 100 Fly, finishing with times of 2:05.17 and 57.03, respectively. Bella Snyder added a pair of runner-up finishes for the Minutewomen, taking second in the 500 Free and in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:36.83.

Wilson Dubois began the individual events with a time of 9:56.51 to take second in the 1000 Free. Jack Artis claimed the runner-up spot in the 100 Breast with a time of 67.54.

Opening Relay Win
The Minutewomen claimed 11 points in the 200 Medley Relay as they opened the day with a first-place finish. Megan MitchellMaggie DesmondSummer Pierce, and Caroline Mahoney put together a winning time of 1:45.16 to beat the Terriers by :02.

UMass returns to the pool on Saturday at Yale to take on the Bulldogs before heading back to Boston on Nov. 18-20 for the Terrier Invitational.
