BOSTON – The Boston University women’s swimming & diving team rallied for a 155-143 victory over Holy Cross in the dual opener on Saturday afternoon at FitRec Competition Pool.
Freshman Katie Pestrichelli earned a pair of distance freestyle wins in her collegiate debut while senior Sasha Ramey (100 free, 100 fly) and junior Haley Newman (200 fly, 400 IM) also had two victories each.
Holy Cross led for the most of the meet before the Terriers came back with strong performances in the final three events (1-meter dive, 400 IM, 400 free relay) to take the victory.
Pestrichelli made an early statement by taking first in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:44.86. She later took first in the 500 free with a time of 5:17.04.
Junior Stella Langenbach touched the wall first in the 200 free, recording a time of 1:55.03. Ramey swam the 100 free in a winning time of 53.49 and later earned a victory in the 100 fly with a time of 57.94.
In the 100 breaststroke, senior Stephanie Liu (1:08.56) edged out classmate Fia McCarty for the top spot (1:08.66). McCarty would go on to claim a win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:29.38.
Souza easily claimed a victory in the 1-meter dive, posting a score of 289.73 to help the Terriers draw close to the Crusaders late in the meet.
Newman’s first win of the day came in the 200 butterfly, where she finished in a time of 2:08.52. She closed out the individual races with a victory in the 400 IM (4:38.67) to help the Terriers erase the deficit.
Entering the 400 freestyle relay up three points, BU sealed the victory when Langenbach, senior Ava Keane, junior Janhvi Choudhary and Ramey won the race in a time of 3:34.18.
BU will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 19) when it visits Bucknell. Meet time is set for noon.
BOSTON – The Boston University men’s swimming & diving team rolled past Holy Cross, 204-90, in the season opener on Saturday at FitRec Competition Pool.
Freshman Giovanni Sullo won two events (200 fly, 400 IM) in his collegiate debut while seniors Jed Tan (50 free, 100 fly) and Justin Liao (100 breast, 200 breast) also picked up a pair of victories.
Sophomore Zein Mahana swept the diving events, highlighted by a career-high 335.70 in the 3-meter event. He won the 1-meter with a score of 295.80.
BU led wire-to-wire as it took the top two spots in the opening relay with junior Tony Ponomarev, Liao, Tan and freshman Abraham Lee leading the way in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:32.60.
Sophomore Jonny Farber picked up the first individual win of the day by touching the wall first in the 100 backstroke in a time of 51.11. BU had the top four finishers in the race.
Liao swept the breaststroke events, claiming a win in the 100 with a time of 57.80 before emerging victorious in the 200 in 2:08.39.
Sullo’s first collegiate win came in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:53.33. He later took first in the 400 IM, posting a time of 4:07.33.
In the 50 free, Tan placed first in 21.70 seconds. He would go on to claim a win in the 100 fly with a time of 50.73.
Freshman Charlie Nenchev made a statement in his Terrier debut, taking first in the 100 free at 47.01, while Ponomarev easily won the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:51.10.
The Terriers put the finishing touches on the victory when Nenchev, freshman Derek Cheng, Lee and freshman Andrew Ignatescu closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay (3:08.67).
BU will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 19) when it visits Bucknell. Meet time is set for noon.

BOSTON – The Holy Cross women’s swimming and diving team competed at Boston University beginning their 2023-24 slate with a Turnpike Trophy contest. The Crusaders suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the Terriers 155-143 Saturday afternoon.
The loss sends Holy Cross to 0-1 and 0-1 in Patriot League dual meets while BU starts the year undefeated at 1-0 and 1-0 PL.
Holy Cross closed the gap in the scoring as they were bettered 214-86 in 2023 trimming the 128 point deficit to only 12 in less than a year.
In the 200-yard backstroke, the Crusaders had the top-four finishers with freshman Laura Arciniegas (2:04.83) placing first, freshman Ellie Reinhart (2:07.14) finishing second with junior Ainsley Nalen (2:07.36) and senior Ginger Berry (2:10.01) coming in third and fourth place.
Arciniegas won another individual event in the 100-yard backstroke at 58.51 with Reinhart coming in second at 59.56. Sophomore Devin Brindle (24.63) and junior Nora Smillie (24.95) went 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Arciniegas, freshman Josie Gieseman, Brindle, and Ainsley Nalen finished first at 1:48.68.
Diver Brenna Short earned her first collegiate victory in the three-meter dive at 268.80 while recording a 267.53 score for second place on the one-meter board which was an NCAA Zone cut.
Holy Cross will be back in action on Friday, October 25 at 4 p.m. for their home opener against Iona in the Hart Center Pool.
BOSTON – The Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving team started their 2024-25 season on the road with a Turnpike Trophy contest at Patriot League opponent Boston University and fell 204-90 Saturday afternoon.
The loss sends the Crusaders to 0-1 and 0-1 in league action while the Terriers are 1-0 and 1-0 in conference meets.
Sophomore Austin Cutcher picked up a pair of first place finishes. He hit the wall first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:46.99) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.16).
Junior Jack Greiner finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.90) adding two second place showings in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.47) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:11.64).
Junior Zach Bubonovich placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.89) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.75).
In the diving events, freshman Griffin Casey totaled a 310.95 score (three meter) and a 271.43 (one meter) in his first collegiate meet.
Holy Cross will be back in action on Friday, October 25 at 4 p.m. for their home opener against Iona in the Hart Center Pool.
