The Wisconsin Athletic Department showcased its student-athletes at the 2017 Buckinghams held at the Overture Center for the Arts in downtown Madison on Monday night.
Aiming to spotlight the overall achievements and excellence of student-athletes, the event recognizes not only the success in their respective sports, in the community and in the classroom, but also their on-stage skills.
The night included a number of performances, which included student-athletes showcasing their vocal, musical and artistic talents.
Prior to the event, student-athletes had the chance to hit the red carpet and attend a dessert reception.
As for the awards, Ann-Renée Desbiens from the women’s hockey team and Morgan McDonald from men’s cross country and track and field were named the male and female Student-Athlete of the Year award winners. The award recognizes the student-athletes who best combine academic and athletic achievements with commitment to community service.
Lauren Carlini from volleyball and Connor Medbery from wrestling were recognized with the Big Ten Medal of Honor, which is given annually at each conference institution to a male and female student-athlete in the graduating class who has demonstrated proficiency in scholarship and sport. The conference’s most exclusive award was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics to recognize academic and athletic excellence.
Zak Showalter from men’s basketball and Haleigh Nelson from volleyball received the Unsung Hero award. The Beyond the Game Award of Excellence was handed out to Keelon Brookins and Sojourn Shelton from football, as well as Brenna Detra from women’s track and field.
LaMar “Soup” Campbell was also recognized as Buckinghams Staff Member of the Year.
