Buffalo Downs Toledo 177-123

The University of Buffalo women took home a dual meet win against Toledo this past weekend, winning 177 to 123. Full results can be found here. Read on for recaps from each team.

Buffalo:

TOLEDO, OH – The UB women’s swimming and diving team continued their season success on Saturday against Toledo. In a total team effort by winning 12 of the 16 events and defeating the Rockets, 177-123. With the win, the Bulls improve to 5-1 and 3-1 in conference action.

Buffalo started off the meet by winning the first four events and earning 38 points from the first-place finishes alone. They added fourteen points from the other placements in those events. Hannah Miller and Jessica Powers finished first and second place with times of 10:23.25 and 10:30.00, respectively, in the 1000 yard freestyle. Powers improved her season-best time in the event by more than 30 seconds.

Megan Burns won the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:51.11, while Jula Box swam the 100 yard backstroke in 57.54 seconds. Saoirse Palu-Benson narrowly beat Julie Schmidt to win the 200 yard butterfly. Sarah Baxter andEve Kosten finished first and second, respectively, in the 50 yard freestyle.

The Bulls added first and second place finishes in both the 100 yard fly and 400 yard IM. Julia Box and Sarah Baxterfinished the 100 yard fly with times of 57.26 and 57.36, while Hannah Miller and Victoria Butler paced the 400 yard IM by finishing the event in 4:33.56 and 4:36.24, respectively.

Abbey Croce led the way in diving by placing first in both the one-meter and three-meter dive. She scored 262.58 in the one-meter dive and 262.80 in the three-meter dive.

With the win, the Bulls finish 3-1 in the MAC dual meets for the first time since the 2010-11 season. UB is back in action on Friday, February 5 when they travel to St. Bonaventure before hosting their final dual meet of the season on Saturday against Cleveland State. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.

Toledo:

TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo swimming and diving team was defeated by Buffalo 177-123 on Saturday afternoon at the UT Rec Center.

Senior Sammy Richart, senior Brooke Edwards, senior Lauren Comer and sophomore Jessica Avery scored the Rocket’s four victories against the Bulls.  UT also had eight second place finishes.

Richart finished three seconds ahead of Avery to win the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.87.

Edwards overcame a battle against Buffalo’s Eve Kosten to win the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.78, her second fastest 100-yard freestyle ever.

Avery swam her second fastest time in the 200 breaststroke at 2:20.57 en route to a victory.

Comer took home first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.10, over two seconds ahead of Buffalo’s Claudia Casale.  She also accounted for three second place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (1:52.53), 500-yard freestyle (5:08.72) and the 800 yard freestyle relay, along with Maggie Hack, Brooke Edwards and Julie Schmidt.

Edwards also finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.53.

Schmidt finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.56.

Senior Jamie Schindler scored 231.15 in the three-meter dive, good for second place.  Sophomore Danielle Forbes finished fifth with a score of 214.65.

The quartet of freshman Stephanie Lohnes, senior Sammy Richart, sophomore Kat Streicher and seniorBrooke Edwards finished second in the 200 yard medley with a time of 1:46.13.

The Rockets travel to Huntington, WV next weekend to take on Ohio and host Marshall for the Marshall Invitational on Friday, Feb. 5 and Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
