Buffalo Sweeps Tri-Meet With Bowling Green & Toledo

TOLEDO, OHIO – The University at Buffalo swimming and diving team competed in a tri-meet this weekend against Bowling Green and Toledo, defeating the Rockets, 195-158 and the Falcons, 217.5-135.5. The Bulls pair of wins come after a plethora of top finishes in both the pool and the diving well.

DAY ONE
At Bowling Green on Friday night, the Bulls rattled off three first place finishes in the pool, laying the groundwork for Saturday.

In the 200 backstroke, Mia Naccarella took first place with a time of 2:01.15. Abigail Malmstrom (2:04.16) followed closely behind Naccarella, taking second place for Buffalo too. Kasey Keaney won the next event for the Bulls, finishing the 200 breaststroke in 2:23.93. Clarice Fisher then snagged the third consecutive event for Buffalo, taking first place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.52. Nicole Aguilar added points to the Bulls score with a third place finish with a time of 2:09.90 to close out day one in the pool.

In the diving well, Victoria Franz won the 3 meter diving event for Buffalo with a score of 334.95. Marialis Kwak took second for the Bulls, adding to the team’s point total.

DAY TWO
Saturday morning at Bowling Green brought more first place finishes for the Bulls, as Marij van der Mast won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07.43. Elise McCaul followed van der Mast closely, taking second place for Buffalo (5:08.41). Nacarella then added second and third event wins for the Bulls, taking first in both the 200 freestyle (1:54.00) and the 100 backstroke (55.71).

In the 100 breaststroke, the Bulls took three of the top five finishing spots, with Grace Rider taking second (1:06.79) Keaney in third (1:07.51) and Fisher in fifth (1:07.69).

In the 100 butterfly, Fisher took second place with a time of 56.48, while Aguilar placed third (56.70).

Buffalo dominated the leaderboards one more time in the 400 yard individual medley, with McCaul placing second (4:37.16), Karen Austin taking third (4:38.37) and Keaney placing fourth (4:41.15).

In the diving well, Franz won the 1 meter event as well, with a score of 291.40. The Bulls completed the diving event with seven of the top eight finishers, with Kwak placing second again (288.25) and Sophie Meuwissen placing third (237.05).

NEXT UP
“I am really proud of the women and the energy we had on both days,” said Head Coach Andy Bashor. We got much better Saturday as the meet went on. I believe we are coming together at the right time and we are looking forward to the MAC Championship in a couple of weeks.”

The Bulls are in action next at the Mid-American Conference Championships, beginning on Wednesday, February 28th, and ending on Saturday, March 2nd.

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women’s swimming & diving team hosted the second day of its tri-meet with Buffalo and Bowling Green on Saturday. The Rockets defeated the Falcons 88.0-79.0 and fell to the Bulls 101.0-66.0 in their final home meet of the 2023-24 season.

Toledo won four events on Saturday, beginning with the 400 medley relay team of Faith SillLauren KilgoreLeah Evans, and Kennedy Lovell. Kilgore had the other two individual victories for UT in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly. UT’s 200 freestyle relay team of Kilgore, Lovell, Evans, and Janne Slegers ended the meet with a first-place finish at 1:35.29.

Before the first race, Toledo honors its six seniors for their contribution to the program: Jovana DuricMadison GiglioRyli Harden,  Kilgore,  Lovell, and Morgan Schuld.

Toledo will next head to Athens, Ohio for the 2024 Mid-American Conference Championship meet Feb. 29-Mar. 2.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team competed in a tri-meet today against Buffalo and Toledo on their Senior Night. The Falcons were swept on the weekend falling to the Bulls 217.5-135.5 and 183-170.

Friday night was the Falcons’ senior night where 11 of the Falcon family were recognized. Rayah BloodLivia CastroNamie EdgeGrace EllisChristy HarperKaren KroskyRiley McNicholsMartina StefinecAva VialGabby Vitela, and Mary Ellen Wolff were all recognized for their efforts over the course of their careers.

Friday night the Falcons didn’t come away with any event wins but produced a strong effort. Friday saw three second place finishes for the Falcons. Senior Namie Edge came away with the Falcons’ first silver placement in the 200 Breaststroke thanks to a time of 2:26.37. Edge was quickly followed by Grace Bodrock taking second in the 200 Butterfly with an effort of 2:05.54, a mere two milliseconds off the leader. The Falcons last second place finish came from one of the Senior Captains. Ava Vial placed second on the podium in the 200 IM thanks to a time of 2:07.42.

Saturday the Falcons saw their lone event win of the weekend meet. Senior Captain Ava Vial came up huge again in the second IM event of the weekend. Ava Vial snatched victory in Toledo in the 400 IM with a time of 4:32.78.

Friday may have been for the seniors, but Saturday was a freshman frenzy. Blanca Sanz took third in the first individual event of the day in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:08.89. Fellow Falcon freshman Joanna Robertson then placed fourth in the 200 Free with a time of 1:56.18.
